Position Overview

Our PL Underwriting team is currently seeking a Sr. Underwriting Manager in Worcester, MA. This is a full‑time, exempt hybrid role. The position has responsibility for managing a group of employees within Personal Lines Underwriting, overseeing growth and profitability, leading a highly engaged workforce, and implementing business initiatives and risk decision‑making programs.

In This Role You Will
  • Participates in strategy development and decision making and is responsible for effective implementation for assigned site.
  • Champions risk selection for state profitability.
  • Responsible for business plans and make timely staffing recommendations within established capacity models.
  • Authorizes opportunities for technical and industry training as part of a personal and professional development program.
  • Directs performance management by setting cascading goals, giving and receiving feedback, documenting and delivering performance reviews, addressing performance issues, creating and implementing development plans while conforming to policies and other internal procedures.
  • Utilizes technology and talent management to increase efficiency and scalability to support growth and underwriting initiatives.
  • Manage risk exposure which includes tracking measures, analyzing reports and financial activity and reinforces goals.
  • Develop, recommend and authorize implementation of risk management initiatives that lead to high quality underwriting decisions and profitability.
  • Responsible for coaching comprehensive risk decision making and negotiation skills.
  • Able to maintain focus and accountability in ambiguous situations.
  • Builds positive relationships with internal/external customers to accomplish organizational goals.
  • Champion cross‑functional & cross‑site collaboration to identify & promote risk management, and underwriting practices.
  • Demonstrates maturity, confidence, and ability to lead and manage change in a dynamic environment. Comfortable working in both collaborative and challenging circumstances and uses appropriate techniques in each.
  • Act as an expert resource for direct reports, other teams, business units and PL leadership.
  • Responsible for communicating results/issues to senior management.
  • Leads initiatives that support business strategies and financial goals.
  • Collaborate with Distribution, State Management and other Personal Lines Operational areas by participating in meetings, agency and insured visits and other supporting activities.

  • Active pursuit of underwriting and agent actions to improve our mix and profitability.
  • Review current processes and tools to identify workflow and efficiency gains that lead to measurable service improvements for agents and policyholders.
  • Increase production capacity via systems, tools, workflows etc.
  • Leverage UW acumen to strengthen overall team’s UW knowledge and expertise.
What You Need To Apply
  • Bachelor’s degree with 7–10 years of relevant work experience with an emphasis on insurance or risk operations. Prior management experience required.
  • Understands complex and challenging risk characteristics and promotes within the team.
  • Hires and develops the right people in the right place at the right time to deliver exceptional results and quality service.
  • Strong people management skills, effective at coaching and motivating.
  • Takes ownership for a successful resolution of problems. Anticipates issues, seeks out and analyzes information collaboratively to propose solutions.
  • Excellent communicator.
  • Strong underwriting and risk decision making skills including project and program management, process analysis and design.
  • Ability to solve challenging business decisions by anticipating issues, analyzing information and finding solutions.
