Personal Finance Staff Writer, Fortune Recommends (Temporary)

Pay $38.46 - $43.27 / hour

Job Description

This is a full-time role.

Fortune is looking to hire one or more personal finance writers on a temp-to-perm basis to write for our recently launched and fast-growing personal finance/e-commerce vertical, Fortune Recommends.

The ideal candidates for this opportunity want to help shape the vision and voice of this growing vertical focused on helping readers sort through and choose the best financial products for their needs, and are driven by high quality and helpfulness.

Ideal candidates are passionate about all things personal finance and expert in one or more topics in the space. They are skilled at interviewing the right experts for authority, distilling complex topics, creating actionable, accessible service pieces, and maintaining accurate, updated lists. Editors will be able to guide staff and freelance writers, assign and approve compelling pitches, and edit copy for accuracy, conciseness, and voice.

You will:

  • Report and write 1–2 personal finance articles per day on a range of topics
  • Help create and maintain our best-of lists as well as maintain our growing archive of content
  • Craft high-quality service journalism that helps readers navigate every aspect of their financial lives
  • Use data to create impactful data visualizations that take your reporting to the next level
  • Work collaboratively with our editors, SEO team, and graphics team
  • Use data and analytics to pitch strategic new content
  • Do daily news sweeps to keep a pulse on what’s happening in the news
  • Generate fresh ideas to pitch editors with new angles on topics consumers need and are searching for
  • Ensure our coverage includes a diversity of ideas, perspectives, and voices
  • Uphold Fortune’s high standards of journalistic rigor, accuracy, and fairness
  • Be available to work 40 hours a week, Monday through Friday

The right candidates…

  • Have experience writing (and/or editing) personal finance content in one or more of our priority personal finance topics: credit cards, banking, insurance, mortgages, investing, and loans
  • Write clean, accurate, and insightful copy on deadline
  • Can comfortably understand, interpret, and translate complex data and financial jargon
  • Are SEO pros and are motivated to crack the code to generate traffic hits
  • Have experience using data and analytics to inform and inspire story choices
  • Are familiar with finding and interviewing sources for stories
  • Can juggle multiple assignments at once
  • Are flexible and adaptable, able to take both direction and initiative as needed
  • Communicate and collaborate professionally and effectively in a remote/hybrid environment
