Job summary

Summit Healthcare Association seeks a Perioperative Care Technician to assist the perioperative team with patient handling, environment care, and equipment transport. You will help position and move patients, transport specimens and x-rays, and support nursing staff in OR suites, upholding safety and quality standards.

The role requires excellent customer service, ability to read and communicate in English, and basic computer skills.

Job description

General Position Summary:

Assists the perioperative care team in many aspects of patient care, including but not limited to, patient care assistance, care of environment, transportation of patients, beds, supplies/equipment, specimens and blood products to, from, and within the surgical unit.

Essential Functions / Major Responsibilities:

Displays proper etiquette and mannerisms that reflect the SHINE Behavior Standards.

Promotes the Patient Safety Standards as a core value of the organization.

Patient Care Assistance

Delivers patient specimens to appropriate areas.

Assists perioperative nurse in the patient holding area.

Assists with positioning, moving, and lifting patients.

Assists the perioperative nurse in providing patient comfort and privacy specific to all patient populations (i.e. pediatric, adolescent, adult, and geriatric).

Assists the surgical team with room turnover/total scrubs.

Assists nursing staff in OR suites as requested.

Conscientiously and continuously applies the principles of quality care provision on a daily basis.

Restocks warmers with blankets, irrigation fluids, and IV fluids.

Assist pre-op/pacu with cleaning bays. Such as removing linen, trash, restocking, and other duties assigned by Charge Nurse.

Team Member:

Prepares OR room for next case with appropriate setup of the OR bed for all surgical cases.

Transports specimens, x-rays, and/or frozen section from and back to OR as needed.

Acts as preceptor for new perioperative care techs following competency-based orientation.

Handles daily requests in timely and efficient manner.

Provides input to RNs, CSTs, and peers to set goals.

Evaluates and documents completion of orientation for new PCTs.

Offers assistance to pre-op and post-op area.

Covers breaks and lunches as assigned.

Displays a positive attitude.

Care of Environment and Equipment:

Demonstrates basic knowledge of cleaning for turnover and termination of operating rooms/total scrubs utilizing Infection Control standards.

Sets up, cleans and delivers equipment to OR suites. Returns clean equipment and supplies to proper location.

Restocks daily supplies as assigned.

Checks O2 tanks for empty and return to O2 storage. Replace full O2 tank to carts.

Changes linen and makes up patient beds.

Removes trash, linen, and used equipment from OR suite at close of cases.

Follows housekeeping and hospital procedures.

Cleans equipment, OR tables, floors, and kick buckets in assigned OR rooms.

Assures stock of personal protective equipment in assigned rooms and halls and soap in scrub sink containers.

Cleans and makes up carts for use.

Cleans and changes sharps containers.

Terminal cleaning of rooms

Responsible for all cleaning within Restricted Zone.

Wipes down all flat surfaces in each OR before first case of the day is opened.

Assists in room containment by emptying suction containers and replacing them.

Cleans all refrigerators and OR staff lounge.

Secondary Functions:

Participates in 80% of departmental meetings and in services, including staff meetings, association wide forums, and seminars.

Reviews department policies and procedures annually.

All other duties as assigned.

Completes all tasks as expressed in the Skills Delineation List.

Physical Demands & Job Conditions:

Exert up to 100 lbs. of force occasionally, and/or up to 50 lbs. of force frequently, and/or up to 20 lbs. of force constantly to move objects. The worker is subject to contact with chemicals, contact with infectious fluids, heavy lifting, constant standing, and encounters with upset/disturbed individuals.

Physical motions include finger dexterity, standing, walking, stooping, crawling, talking, reaching, feeling, sitting, bending, kneeling, climbing, grasping, listening/hearing, handling, lifting up to 50-100 pounds, and repetitive motions of the hands, wrists, and feet.

This is considered a safety-sensitive position.
