POSITION SUMMARY
The Coordinator – Perioperative Services is a registered nurse (RN) with expertise in perioperative/procedural nursing and shown leadership and management skills. The Coordinator leads and educates all staff on the unit and directs planning, implementation, and evaluation of patient care programs. The Coordinator oversees PAT, Ambulatory Surgery, Ambulatory Procedures, Operating Room, PACU, and Endoscopy and reports to the Director – Surgical Services.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
MANAGEMENT OF PERSONNEL AND LEADERSHIP
- Interview and select candidates with appropriate clinical skills and professional characteristics.
- Communicate consistently with employees regarding performance expectations.
- Plan and conduct formal performance reviews that are timely, ongoing, and objective.
- Apply knowledge of employee expectations.
- Promote or terminate employees based on standards of practice, care, policy and procedures.
- Interact with employees fairly, timely, appropriately, and decisively.
- Mentor and role‑model to develop leadership and management skills.
- Delegate activities and supervise accomplishment.
- Supervise interdisciplinary employees, including nurses and ancillary staff.
MANAGEMENT OF RESOURCES
- Adjust unit staffing patterns to reflect care requirements, census, resources, and the clinical staffing plan.
- Collaborate with the Director to develop the annual budget.
- Adjust systems to meet budget and productivity targets for cost‑effective quality care.
- Analyze financial information monthly and complete exception reports with recommendations.
- Support decentralized management philosophy (Shared Governance) at the unit level.
- Ensure unit space utilization maximizes safety and efficiency.
- Collaborate with other departments for unit maintenance and environmental safety.
- Develop and monitor systems to assure cost‑effectiveness through material selection and charge monitoring.
- Encourage cost‑effective behavior through observation, education, and accountability.
- Identify and resolve complex operational problems and consult with Director/CNO when needed.
CLINICAL PRACTICE
- Develop and provide a patient care system that encourages professional practice and quality, cost‑effective outcomes.
- Ensure patient and family care meets Oneida Health standards.
- Provide clinical consultation and assist with patient care as needed.
- Analyze clinical practice for opportunities to increase effectiveness and efficiency.
- Identify clinical indicators to evaluate quality care and use findings to improve practice.
- Collaborate with physicians and other professionals to address patient and family needs.
- Meet regularly with MD department chairs to effect change and develop protocols.
EDUCATION/OUTREACH
- Identify and establish clinical learning opportunities for students in various health care disciplines.
- Implement and evaluate systematic orientation for new staff.
- Develop and implement ongoing unit‑based continuing education plans.
- Participate in organization‑wide education initiatives.
- Support Oneida Health’s mission through consultation, health promotion, education, and community agency requests.
RESEARCH
- Evaluate current nursing research for applicability within units/programs of care.
- Apply quality assurance study results to design process improvement projects.
QUALIFICATIONS
EDUCATION
Bachelor of Science in Nursing (required); Master of Science in Nursing (preferred).
EXPERIENCE
Five (5) years of relevant experience, including progressive nursing management or educator experience and current regulatory/accreditation experience.
LICENSES & CERTIFICATION
Unencumbered RN license in New York (required); Basic Life Support and Advanced Life Support (required); certification in specialty (preferred).
