Job summary

Beth Israel Lahey Health is seeking a Perinatal Surgical Technologist to support maternal-newborn services. The role involves assisting with intra-operative care, sterile technique, and multi-skilled nursing tasks in labor and delivery.

The ideal candidate has graduate-level Surgical Technology training, CST certification, and BLS. Prior surgery and CNA-type experience are preferred to ensure patient safety and efficient OR operations.

Qualifications

  • Graduate of an accredited school of Surgical Technology.
  • Previous surgery experience preferred.
  • CNA preferred or equivalent experience: multi-skilled CNA training, EKG, Phlebotomy, Simple Respiratory & Rehabilitative functions.
  • Surgical Technology Certificate required; CST required; NBSTSA required; BLS Certification.

Responsibilities

  • Maintains AORN standards of technical and aseptic practices.
  • Performs scrub technician duties in an organized, efficient, and professional manner.
  • Disassembles delivery table and case cart after use, disposing of hazardous waste and sharps; stocks and cleans instruments.
  • Prepares delivery and operating rooms early after use.
  • Maintains adequate linen and surgical supplies.
  • Sets priorities and updates Kardexes to ensure supplies and equipment are available.
  • Monitors patient safety in OR and labor/delivery areas.
  • Performs scrub duties efficiently in emergencies.
  • Performs basic patient care per nursing plan, respecting privacy and confidentiality.
  • Reports urgent data and findings to the RN.

Job Description:

Assists with the delivery of patient care utilizing knowledge of asepsis and intra-operative management. In addition to patient care duties, performs a variety of stocking, supply, and housekeeping functions necessary for the operation of the nursing units. The primary responsibility will be focused on performing a variety of technical, therapeutic, administrative tasks and procedures for which they have been trained. Responsibilities include maintenance of equipment and supplies throughout the labor and delivery unit. The Perinatal Surgical Technologist must demonstrate the ability and willingness to participate in Patient Care Team as a multi-skilled caregiver in all areas of Maternal Newborn Services. Is responsible for quality of own work and must remain flexible in response to change. Performs all other duties as assigned.

Essential Role Responsibilities

Under the direction of the RN, performs basic operating room skills.

  • Maintains AORN standards of technical and aseptic practices.
  • Performs scrub technician duties in an organized, efficient, and professional manner.
  • Efficiently and appropriately disassembles delivery table and case cart after use, as evidenced by proper disposal of hazardous waste products and sharps, thorough stocking and cleaning of all instruments.
  • Establishes preparedness of all delivery and operating rooms as early as possible after use.
  • Maintains adequate linen and surgical supplies.
  • Demonstrates ability to set priorities.
  • Utilizes, maintains, and updates Kardexes to assure appropriate supplies, instrumentation, and equipment are available at all times.
  • Maintains patient safety in the operating room and labor and delivery rooms by assessing the functioning of surgical and infant care equipment prior to utilization.
  • Performs scrub duties efficiently in an emergency situation.
  • Performs basic patient care in accordance with current standards of nursing care, consistent with the plan of care, following established policies and procedures, respecting privacy and confidentiality (i.e., ADLs).
  • Performs basic technical procedures according to established standards accurately and efficiently. Reports all findings to the RN. Able to recognize and report all urgent data (i.e., suction, point-of-care testing).
  • Collects and reports routine patient data accurately and efficiently (i.e., vital signs, height, weight, intake, output, specimens).
  • Assists other members of the health care team in providing care or assistance with specific procedures as directed by the RN.
  • Recognizes and reports urgent and appropriate patient changes/issues, including response to pain management, in a timely manner to solve problems or prevent further complications.
  • Assists health care team members in an emergency by following directions, locating emergency equipment, or assisting in providing care to other patients as needed.
  • Adheres to Patient Care Services and Maternal Newborn Services policies and procedures.

Qualifications

Education/Experience:

Pay Range:

$33.50 - $49.78

The pay range listed for this position is the base hourly wage range the organization reasonably and in good faith expects to pay for this position at this time. Actual compensation is determined based based on several factors, that may include seniority, education, training, relevant experience, relevant certifications, geographyof work location, job responsibilities, or other applicable factors permissible by law. Compensation may exceed the base hourly rate depending on shift differentials, call pay, premium pay, overtime pay, and other additional pay practices, as applicable to the position and in accordance with the law.
