Job summary

Rochester General Hospital seeks a Perfusionist to manage the heart-lung machine during open heart procedures and support pacemaker-related care. You will select oxygenators, prime bypass circuits, perform equipment maintenance, and maintain sterile technique throughout bypass operations.

Responsibilities include communicating with the surgical team, interpreting lab data, responding to emergencies, and contributing to patient records and device maintenance.

Qualifications

  • Graduate of an accredited school of Nursing and/or Cardiovascular Perfusion program.
  • Valid NYS Perfusion Permit or NYS license in Perfusion.
  • At least 3 years of experience in perfusion preferred.

SUMMARYResponsible for planning, organizing, and implementing the set-up and operation of the heart-lung machine and related equipment for open heart surgical patients. Maintains a high degree of skill in operating and maintaining equipment and an understanding of the principles and methodology of current perfusion techniques and pacemaker technology. Participates in the marketing of the perfusionist service to the Medical staff. Maintains active communication with the Medical staff, peers, and the Perioperative staff. Strong analytical, computer, and communication skills are essential for success in this role.STATUS: Full TimeLOCATION: Rochester General HospitalATTRIBUTESGraduate of an accredited school of Nursing and/or Cardiovascular Perfusion program requiredValid NYS Perfusion Permit or NYS license in PerfusionAt least 3 years of experience in perfusion preferredRESPONSIBILITIESClinical Practice:Implements perfusion practice and pacemaker procedures, in accordance with hospital policy and procedure, departmental, area and national standardsDemonstrates the knowledge and skills necessary to provide appropriate care to patients from the age of thirteen (13) years onChooses appropriate oxygenator and accessory equipment in accordance with current perfusion standards and medical staff preferenceAssembles, primes and inspects the integrity of the bypass circuitMaintains sterile technique during the use of all equipmentOperate heart lung machine and keeps the surgeon informed of patient status. Attempts to maintain normal physiologic parameters according to current perfusion standards of practice during the bypass period (i.e. - blood pressure, blood gas values, blood flow rates)Interprets lab data and takes appropriate action to correct abnormal values. Works in conjunction with the surgeon and anesthesiologist to provide optimal careRecognizes, evaluates and corrects all emergency perfusion situations which may arise during the bypass periodPrepares and administers antibiotics and other drugs used during the bypass periodAssists other perfusionists by drawing blood samples and performing appropriate lab studiesEvaluates new equipment in the surgical setting, providing feedback and recommendations to the Nurse MangerPerforms preventative maintenance calibration and cleaning of all equipmentMaintains accurate and complete records of all procedures and ensures proper placement in the patients chart and permanent perfusion recordAssists in the insertion of permanent pacemakers. Operates pacemaker analyzers and programmersAssumes on-call dutiesEvaluates own performance based on Perfusion Standards of PracticeEnsures a safe and supportive environment for staff, medical staff, patients, residents, and studentsFollows policy/procedure for Cardiovascular operationsRemoves identified faulty equipment from service and notifies Nurse MangerDisposes of contaminated materials in accordance with Infection Control policyMaintains active communication with surgeon and anesthesiologist during the bypass period to ensure provision of safe quality patient careAttends 100% CPR, Fire Safety, Infection Control and Disaster Plan in-servicesAge Specific Competency Training:Participates in Age Specific Competency Training, within 12-month period of time and demonstrates the ability to obtain information and assess patient needsApplies the knowledge of growth and development stages in direct patient/customer interactions, as observed by the supervisor.Continuing Education:Completes 100% of hospital-required mandatory in-services.Participates in presentations of surgical case reviews with peers.Attends 75% of scheduled monthly in-services.Maintains 15 CEU per year inclusive of mandatory programs.Obtains and/or maintains current American Board of Cardiovascular Perfusion certification with its CEU and clinical requirements.Materials Management:Facilitates the systematic maintenance of material resources to support the Cardiovascular Department functionsHandles equipment carefully and is familiar with its operation and maintenanceCompletes itemized patient charge sheet for each procedureNotifies Nurse Manager of depleted suppliesPerform other duties as assignedEDUCATION:LICENSES / CERTIFICATIONS:PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:M - Medium Work - Exerting 20 to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or 10 to 25 pounds of force frequently, and/or greater than negligible up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects; Requires frequent walking, standing or squatting.For disease specific care programs refer to the program specific requirements of the department for further specifications on experience and educational expectations, including continuing education requirements.Any physical requirements reported by a prospective employee and/or employee’s physician or delegate will be considered for accommodations.PAY RANGE:$69.00 - $97.00CITY:RochesterPOSTAL CODE:14621The listed base pay range is a good faith representation of current potential base pay for a successful full time applicant. It may be modified in the future and eligible for additional pay components.
