Job summary

Bridgeport Hospital is seeking a Surgical Technologist to join our operating room team. The role supports surgeons, anesthesiologists, and nurses by preparing the operative site, passing instruments, and maintaining sterile technique throughout cases.

Applicants should graduate from a CAAHEP-accredited program or NBSTSA-defined equivalent and pursue NBSTSA certification within 1 year of employment. This is an on-site position within the hospital’s OR environment.

Qualifications

• Graduate of a CAAHEP accredited surgical technology program or NBSTSA-defined program, or completed Bridgeport Hospital's on-the-job training.
• Completion of licensed Certified Surgical Technology Program; certification within 1 year of employment for new hires.
• Demonstrates knowledge of surgical department practices and sterile techniques.

Responsibilities

• Assist circulator and prepare operative site under RN direction.
• Provide scrub and passing of instruments, sponges, and sutures as directed.
• Maintain asepsis and sterile technique; ensure readiness of OR equipment and supplies.

He/she is an integral member of the surgical team who works closely with surgeons, anesthesiologists, registered nurses, and other surgical personnel in delivering patient care and assumes supervised responsibilities before, during, and after surgery. Responsibilities include but are not limited to preparing the operating room and instruments, equipment, and supplies that will be needed; positioning and preparing the patient for surgery; and passing instruments, sponges, and sutures to the surgeon. Responsibilities

• 1.Demonstrates the role of the assisting circulator.
• 1.1Prepares the operative site for surgery under the direction of a registered nurse and assists the other members of the surgical team as needed; reports status of procedure to relief team.
• 2.Demonstrates the accountability as a health care professional.
• 2.1Recognizes that each practitioner is individually responsible for his/her actions.
• 3.Demonstrates patient care concepts.
• 3.1Verifies patient's identity with a registered nurse.
• 4.Demonstrates surgical case presentation skills.
• 4.1Applies knowledge of normal and pathological anatomy and physiology to individualize patient care.
• 5.Demonstrates the role of a scrub person.
• 5.1Follows principles of correct hand scrub, gown, and gloves others, and ties and secures sterile gowns; completes scrub protocol before each case according to OR standards.
• 6.Demonstrates the application of the principles of asepsis and disinfection in a knowledgeable manner in the care of the supplies, instruments, and the environment.
• 6.1Identifies the principles of sterile technique and applies these techniques when assisting each operative procedure.

Qualifications

EDUCATION

Graduate of CAAHEP accredited surgical technology program or formal program as defined by the NBSTSA or who has completed the structured on the job training program at Bridgeport Hospital.

LICENSURE

Completion of licensed Certified Surgical Technology Program. As of January 1, 2012 all newly hired Surgical Technologist will be certified or obtain certification within 1 year of employment. Surgical Technician hired before January 1, 2012 will be grandfathered in.

SPECIAL SKILLS

Demonstrates knowledge of all aspects of the surgical department and works independently on minor or minimally complex cases., Utilizes the recommended guidelines as set forth in the Association of Surgical Technologist Standards of Practice in accomplishing job related responsibilities., Initiates the application process on taking the NBSTSA certifying exam within 1 year of employment. Grandfather clause: ST exempt if graduated < 1995.

PHYSICAL DEMAND

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand; walk; stoop, kneel, or crouch; use hands to finger, handle, or feel; and talk and hear. They may occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus. The employee is occasionally exposed to fumes or airborne particles. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
