Job description

Join our Laboratory team as a Lab Associate, responsible for collecting blood and non‑blood specimens, processing samples, and ensuring accurate reporting. You will work in a clinical setting with a focus on patient safety and quality outcomes.

Position Details
  • Location: 147 Milk St. Boston, MA 02109 (Post Office Square)
  • Secondary Location: 142 Berkley St. Boston, MA 02116 (Copley)
  • Department: Laboratory
  • Schedule: Per Diem; availability Monday - Friday 7:45 am - 7 pm when called in.
Primary Responsibilities
  • Collect blood specimens using venipuncture, finger stick, and heel stick
  • Collect non‑blood specimens such as urine, sputum
  • Verify test requisition or label for accuracy and resolve discrepancies
  • Assemble collection equipment (tourniquet, needles, disposable containers, etc.)
  • Verify patient identity and communicate with patients to allay fear of the procedure
  • Perform venipuncture: apply tourniquet, locate vein, swab, insert needle, withdraw, apply treatment, label and store blood container
  • Accession and process specimens for laboratory testing
  • Record requests for collections, answer general questions, take messages or route calls
  • Perform waived or moderately complex tests (e.g., bacterial overgrowth) using test kits or lab instruments; conduct preventive maintenance, troubleshooting, and calibration; know reagent stability, storage, and quality control
  • Participate in proficiency testing and follow quality control procedures before reporting results
  • Contribute to general laboratory functions, attend staff meetings and training sessions
  • Maintain neat and clean work area and restock supplies
  • Perform receptionist duties including greeting patients, reviewing request sheets, providing instructions, and answering questions
  • Execute computer functions related to specimen processing
  • Record daily specimen volumes, maintain supplies of questionnaires, and manage filing
  • Assist in training student interns and new employees
  • Assist in other clinical areas with specimen processing and testing procedures as assigned
  • Adhere to all laboratory policies and review them annually
  • Communicate clearly with coworkers, medical staff, and supervisors about workflow or technical issues
  • Adhere to PPE and hand‑washing protocols when handling biohazards
  • Use safety devices for sharps per established procedures
  • Ability to obtain specimens from all ages
Required Qualifications
  • High School Diploma or GED (or higher)
Preferred Qualifications
  • Graduation from a Phlebotomy Technical Training Program
  • Phlebotomy Technician (PBT) certification
  • Previous phlebotomy experience or equivalent externship
  • American Heart Association Basic Life Support (BLS)
  • Medical terminology knowledge (≤ 1 year experience)
  • Proficiency in Lab Information Systems (LIS) and Electronic Medical Records (EMR)
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Strong interpersonal skills and customer‑service orientation
