The People Operations Generalist supports hundreds of colleagues across 24+ states and Canada, focusing on employee relations intake, leaves, and multi-state compliance.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Human Resources, Business Administration, or a related field (or equivalent work experience).
  • At least 4 years of progressive HR generalist experience, including direct ownership of employee relations intake and leave administration.
  • Demonstrated multi-state HR experience with strong working knowledge of California employment law, including wage and hour, protected leaves, and accommodation requirements.
  • Experience administering HRIS platforms and building reporting from them, with comfort working inside configured workflows, rules, and integrations, and the aptitude to learn new systems quickly.
  • Evidence of having improved a manual or repetitive process through better use of systems, whether independently or in support of a system owner.
  • Proven ability to handle highly sensitive matters with discretion, sound judgment, and complete documentation.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to build trust with employees, managers, and leadership.
  • Highly organized, with the ability to manage concurrent deadlines across compliance, leave, and employee relations workstreams.

Responsibilities

Position Summary:

The People Operations Generalist supports MDpanel’s employee base of several hundred team members across 24+ states and Canada, with a concentration in California. Reporting to the Director of People Operations, this role owns employee relations intake, leave administration, and multi-state compliance, and keeps the workflows behind them running as the People function scales with the business.

The Generalist owns the day-to-day workflows behind core people operations and partners with the Director to improve processes and introduce thoughtful automation. The role also leads work requiring discretion and sound judgment, including documenting employee relations matters, administering complex leaves, interpreting state-specific employment requirements, and advising managers on routine people matters.

Success in this role requires independent judgment within established frameworks, strong instincts about when to escape, and unwavering discretion with sensitive information. With a direct impact on the company’s compliance posture and employee experience, the Generalist serves as a trusted and highly visible partner to employees, managers, and People leadership.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

Employee Relations

  • Serve as first point of intake for employee relations matters; conduct initial assessments and routine investigations, maintain thorough documentation, and partner with the Director of People Operations on complex or high-risk matters.
  • Provide managers with day-to-day guidance on performance conversations, attendance, accommodations, and policy application, escalating complex or high-risk matters appropriately.

Leave & Accommodation Administration

  • Administer leaves of absence end-to-end across all states of operation, including FMLA, CFRA, PDL, and state paid leave programs, coordinating with payroll and benefits vendors.
  • Manage the interactive process for workplace accommodations, maintaining compliant documentation throughout.

Multi-State Compliance

  • Own the multi-state compliance calendar: required postings, state registrations, new-hire reporting, wage and hour requirements, and annual filings including EEO-1 and California pay data reporting.
  • Monitor legislative and regulatory changes across all states of operation, with particular depth in California, and translate changes into policy and process updates.
  • Maintain audit-ready records, including I-9 compliance and personnel file standards.

People Operations & Systems

  • Own onboarding and offboarding execution, ensuring a consistent, compliant, and high-quality employee experience.
  • Serve as backup to the payroll administrator.
  • Own HRIS data integrity and the reporting built on it, including headcount, turnover, and compliance metrics.
  • Operate, test, and maintain automated people workflows across the HRIS and adjacent tools, supporting the Director of People Operations on new builds and flagging the manual processes that should be automated next.
  • Maintain the employee handbook and policy library, partnering with the Director on updates and rollouts.

Qualifications and Preferred Skills:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Human Resources, Business Administration, or a related field (or equivalent work experience).

Nice to have:

  • PHR, SHRM-CP, or equivalent HR certification.
  • Experience in healthcare, medical-legal services, or another regulated multi-state environment.
  • Experience with Rippling, or with workflow automation tools beyond core HRIS functionality
  • Exposure to benefits administration and open enrollment support.
