Job summary

The Commonwealth of Pennsylvania through PennDOT seeks a CDL Operator Trainee to learn essential equipment operations and provide support for safe travel across Pennsylvania. The program includes hands-on training designed for long-term growth within public service.

Position is full-time with daytime hours, potential overtime, and a starting salary of $42,347 per year before taxes. Telework is not offered for this role. A conditional offer will require background checks and drug screening.

Qualifications

• Valid Pennsylvania non-commercial Class C Driver's License or equivalent.
• Active Pennsylvania Class A or B Commercial Driver Learner's Permit on first day of work.
• Active Medical Examiner's Certificate per FMCSA regulations by first day of work.
• Operation of vehicles or equipment with manual transmission within probationary period.
• Subject to Drug and Alcohol testing per Federal Regulations.
• Must be able to perform essential job functions.

DESCRIPTION OF WORK

This position helps keep Pennsylvania highways and bridges safe by learning to operate key construction and maintenance equipment and by supporting hands-on crew tasks. It also provides structured training to prepare you for a Transportation Equipment Operator A role. As a PennDOT CDL Operator Trainee, you will perform the following duties:

• Equipment Training: Learn to operate heavy trucks, loaders, and related construction equipment
• Safety Practices: Follow established safety procedures and use protective gear to maintain a safe work environment
• Tool Operation: Use motorized and non-motorized hand tools to support maintenance tasks
• Equipment Checks: Complete pre-and post-operation inspections and make field adjustments
• Environmental Compliance: Carry out environmental protection and management requirements

Work Schedule and Additional Information:

• Full-time employment
• Work hours are 7:00 AM to 3:00 PM, Monday - Friday, with a 30-minute lunch.
• Travel and overtime may be required. Work hours subject to change due to weather and season. Dual shifts will be in effect November through March.
• Telework: You will not have the option to telework in this position.
• Salary:Selected candidates who are new to employment within the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania will begin employment at the starting annual salary of $42,347.00 (before taxes).

Required Experience, Training & Eligibility

QUALIFICATIONS

Special Requirements:

• You must be in possession of a valid Pennsylvania non-commercial Class C Driver's License or equivalent.
• All employees must possess an active Pennsylvania Class A or B Commercial Driver Learner's Permit on the first day of work.
• All positions require employees to possess an active Medical Examiner's Certificate in accordance with Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration Regulations by the first day of work.

Additional Requirements:

• This position requires operation of vehicles or equipment with a manual transmission within the probationary period.
• This position is subject to Drug and Alcohol testing in accordance with Federal Regulations.
• You must be able to perform essential job functions.
