Job summary

Oriana House, Inc. is seeking a Peer Support Specialist in Akron, OH to engage individuals in recovery across diverse settings, including courts and outpatient programs. The role emphasizes empathy, relationship-building, and connection to recovery resources.

Essential duties include coaching for recovery planning, collaboration with clinical teams, and outreach to hard-to-reach clients. Ohio driver’s license and a flexible schedule are required; Peer Support Certification is needed within 3

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent required.
  • Peer Support Certification required within 3 months of hire.
  • Valid Ohio driver’s license and acceptable driving record.
  • Ability to work a flexible schedule, including some evenings and weekends.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and ability to work with a diverse client population.

Responsibilities

  • Engage individuals in recovery through outreach and ongoing support.
  • Build trusted relationships by listening empathetically and offering consistent peer support.
  • Support client-directed recovery planning by helping clients transition to individualized wellness plans.
  • Provide recovery education and coaching, including information on stages of recovery and coping strategies.
  • Connect clients to resources such as recovery housing, employment, healthcare, and 12-step programs.
  • Collaborate with treatment providers to reinforce clinical services and encourage sustained recovery.

STARTING RATE:$17.00 (no certificate upon hire) / $18 (certified upon hire)

As a Peer Support Specialist, you may work with clients in a variety of settings including:

  • Correctional Facilities – Provide peer support to individuals preparing for re-entry; assist with recovery planning and linkages to post-release services.
  • Recovery Housing – Support clients in building sober routines and accessing resources for employment, health, and daily living.
  • Specialty Courts (e.g., Drug or Mental Health Court) – Help participants meet court requirements, attend court and treatment appointments, and stay engaged in recovery.
  • Outpatient Programs – Work alongside clinical teams to reinforce treatment goals and provide peer-led recovery support.

Essential functions of this job include, but are not limited to

  • Engage individuals in recovery through outreach and ongoing support, including those who may be hard to reach or hesitant to seek help.
  • Build trusted relationships by listening empathetically and offering consistent, compassionate peer support.
  • Support client-directed recovery planning by helping clients transition from professional treatment to individualized wellness plans.
  • Provide recovery education and coaching, including information on stages of recovery, coping strategies, and navigating daily challenges.
  • Connect clients to critical resources such as recovery housing, employment, healthcare, support groups, and 12-step programs.
  • Collaborate with treatment providers to reinforce clinical services and encourage sustained recovery through one-on-one, and group support.
