Job summary

Compass Health seeks a Peer Counselor to provide recovery-based support at the MARC Healing Center under supervision. You will share lived experience to foster hope, help clients stabilize, and build community living skills for long-term recovery.

You will mentor clients, connect them with natural supports, and document interactions while maintaining confidentiality per HIPAA and agency policies. This role requires WA certification and a valid driver’s license.

Qualifications

  • High School Diploma or equivalent.
  • Current Washington State Peer Counselor Certification required.
  • Experience as a Peer Counselor preferred.
  • Lived experience with a behavioral health diagnosis required.
  • Must submit Agency Affiliated Counselor application if not credentialed through WA DOH.
  • Current First Aid & CPR certification, or able to obtain within 90 days of hire.
  • Valid WA Driver’s License and reliable vehicle, with insurance if applicable.

Responsibilities

  • Provide peer support and validation to clients, encouraging recovery participation.
  • Serve as a mentor and role model to promote hope and empowerment.
  • Assist clients in identifying community supports and resources.
  • Offer reassurance and support to clients’ family and natural supports.
  • Engage in active listening and strength-based interactions.
  • Collaborate with staff to monitor client symptoms and contribute to treatment planning.
  • Advocate for participants within the treatment and support system.
  • Document interactions per state and agency standards.
  • Use teachable moments to support coping and daily living skills.
  • Conduct follow-up calls post-discharge to check progress and maintain connections.
  • Participate in supervision, trainings, and team meetings.
  • Maintain confidentiality per HIPAA and policies.

Introduction
Compass Health is the region’s largest private, non-profit organization providing mental health and chemical dependency services in Island, San Juan, Skagit, Snohomish, and Whatcom counties of Western Washington. We provide quality creative services to children, families, and adults in a variety of outpatient, residential and inpatient settings.
Overview

The Peer Counselor provides peer support and recovery-based services to clients at the MARC Healing Center under the supervision of the Program Manager. This position plays a vital role in promoting recovery, empowerment, and independence by sharing lived experience and fostering hope.

Peer Counselors assist individuals in stabilizing during crisis, building self-advocacy skills, developing natural supports, and gaining community living skills to support long-term recovery.

Responsibilities
  • Provide peer support and validation to clients, encouraging personal responsibility and active participation in their recovery.

  • Serve as a mentor and role model to promote hope, empowerment, and self-determination.

  • Assist clients in identifying and accessing community and natural supports, including behavioral health treatment, peer groups, and basic needs resources.

  • Offer reassurance and support to clients’ family members, friends, and natural supports.

  • Engage in active listening and strength-based interactions with clients.

  • Collaborate with program staff to monitor client symptoms and behavior, contributing to treatment planning that honors client voice and choice.

  • Advocate for participants within the treatment and support system as appropriate.

  • Fully document interactions with clients and their supports per state, local, and agency standards.

  • Use teachable moments to support recovery and development of coping and daily living skills.

  • Conduct follow-up phone calls post-discharge to check on client progress and maintain supportive connections.

  • Participate in regular supervision, trainings, and team meetings.

  • Maintain confidentiality and safeguard client health information per Compass Health’s HIPAA and agency policies.

  • Demonstrate respect for diversity and uphold trauma-informed and recovery-oriented care.

Requirements
  • High School Diploma or equivalent.

  • Current Washington State Peer Counselor Certification required.

  • Experience as a Peer Counselor preferred.

  • Lived experience with a behavioral health diagnosis required.

  • Basic computer proficiency, including experience with electronic medical records (EMR).

  • Ability to pass a pre-employment background check, which may include a DSHS search.


Physical Demands / Work Environment

The position is based in a Triage Facility and requires the ability to physically participate in de-escalation and behavioral intervention as needed. While performing the duties of this job, the employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 20 pounds and is regularly required to sit, stand, walk, talk, and use close vision. The work environment noise level is typically moderate to loud.
