Job summary

University Health Associates in Morgantown, WV seeks a Certified Genetic Counselor to provide comprehensive genetic counseling to patients and families across a broad range of conditions, assessing recurrence risk, inheritance patterns, and available treatments and services.

You will obtain and interpret medical data, coordinate laboratory and clinical testing, and prepare written reports with recommendations for physicians and families. Travel for outreach clinics is required.

Responsibilities

• Provides genetic counseling to patients and families including a wide range of genetic conditions and recurrence risk.
• Obtain and interpret family history, birth history, medical history and test results; coordinate lab and clinical testing.
• Participate as a team member in informational sessions and ensure coordination of testing.
• Prepare written reports for referring physicians, agencies and families with recommendations.
• Coordinate implementation of recommendations and respond to inquiries from patients and providers.
• Travel for outreach clinics and engage with healthcare and social services for families with special needs.

EXPERIENCE

• One (1) year experience working with patients and families in aclinical setting.

CORE DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

• Provides genetic counseling to patients and families including awide range of genetic conditions with assessment of recurrence andoccurrence of the condition, nature of the condition, mode ofinheritance, recurrence risk, treatments, prognosis, availableservices, and support groups.
• Obtain and interpret specific data including family history,birth history, medical history and test results. Integrate clinicand genetic information for specialized laboratory and clinicaltesting. Assess the patient and family members; level ofunderstanding of development and behavioral relationships.
• Participate as a team member in informative and educationalsessions. Assure laboratory testing is coordinated within andoutside the institution.
• Prepare a written report of the patient’s clinic visit for thereferring physician, agencies and families includingrecommendations.
• Coordinate the implementation of those recommendations.
• Handle inquiries from patients, physicians, nurses and communityagencies regarding patient referrals, management and geneticquestions. Develop a working knowledge of healthcare and socialservices available to children with special needs in West Virginiaand surrounding states.
• Intervention with local families, agencies and physicians byheightening the awareness of services and health behaviors that mayreduce the symptoms of a genetic condition, facilitate thesuccessful adaptation of the disease process, education about,administer and monitor responses of therapy of genetic conditions,advocate for and facilitate access to genetic resources and supportgroups and network with members of the genetic community locally,nationally and internationally as needed.
• Teach classes and workshops on genetic evaluation and geneticconditions to residents, students and community groups asrequested.
• Schedule patients. Communicate with local physicians andfamilies the timeliness of genetic evaluation for individuals andprenatal patients.
• Fill out paperwork including computer forms, billing forms andother date forms on each patient.
• Travel required for outreach clinics.
