Job summary

Shriners Children’s is seeking a full-time Pediatric Orthopedic Spine Surgeon for our Northern California team. Board certification/eligibility and fellowships in pediatric orthopedics and spinal surgery are required, with interest in congenital deformities and EOS approaches.

Academic ties with UC Davis are possible. As a tertiary/quaternary referral center, SHNC treats complex deformities and aims to advance growth modulation using VEPTR/MAGEC devices.

Qualifications

• MD or DO from an accredited medical school.
• Completion of an ACGME-accredited Orthopedic Surgery residency.
• Fellowship training in Pediatric Orthopedic Surgery and Spinal Surgery.
• ABOS board certified/eligible or completing certification.
• Eligibility for CA medical licensure and DEA.
• BLS for Healthcare Providers and PALS certification.
• Experience treating pediatric spinal deformities.
• Knowledge of pediatric imaging, casting, and nonoperative care.
• Strong communication with families and multidisciplinary teams.

Responsibilities

• Perform clinical assessments and treatment planning for pediatric spinal disorders.
• Provide surgical and non-surgical management per current standards.
• Participate in inpatient/outpatient care, pre/postoperative management.
• Perform operative procedures following institutional protocols.
• Collaborate with pediatricians, physiatrists, and other subspecialists.

Job Overview

Shriners Children’s is looking for a full-time Pediatric Orthopedic Spine Surgeon to join our team at Shriners Children’s Northern California. Successful candidates will be board certified/eligible and have successfully completed a fellowship in both pediatric orthopedic surgery and spinal surgery. As a tertiary and quaternary referral center for domestic and international patients with complex Pediatric Spine Deformity, the candidate should have experience and interest in the treatment of Congenital Deformities which require resection or osteotomy, severe and delayed treatment of idiopathic deformities. As a current leader in the treatment of Juvenile Idiopathic Deformities that are amenable to growth modulation, some experience in the use of anterior vertebral body tethering is recommended. Finally, as early onset scoliosis patients are frequently referred to SHNC, treatment of EOS patients with EDF casting is a modality frequently deployed as a re VEPTR and MAGEC devices (Juvenile growth modulation). Currently, SHNC case volume averages 175 major Pediatric Deformities per year.

As SHNC has no Emergency Department, call coverage is limited to on call rounding for inpatients and availability for hospitalized inpatients. Academic appointment with the UC Davis affiliate is an option with a small clinical footprint available through the UC Davis Department of Orthopedics.

Key Responsibilities

• Perform clinical assessments, diagnostic evaluations, and treatment planning for pediatric patients with spinal disorders, including scoliosis, kyphosis, spondylolisthesis, spinal deformities, spinal trauma, congenital spine anomalies, and other pediatric spinal pathologies


• Provide surgical and non-surgical management based on current standards of care, evidence-based practices, and patient-specific considerations.


• Participate in inpatient and/or outpatient care, including preoperative and postoperative management, consultations, and discharge planning.


• Perform operative procedures in accordance with institutional protocols and safety standards.


• Collaborate with pediatricians, physiatrists, physical therapists, anesthesiologists, and other subspecialists in the coordinated care of patients.


• Maintain accurate and timely documentation within the electronic health record system in compliance with legal, regulatory, and institutional requirements.


• Participate in shared call coverage, hospital rounds, and trauma response as assigned.


• Contribute to departmental quality improvement, peer review, and clinical governance processes.


• May participate in medical education, research, and scholarly activities depending on institutional affiliation or department expectations.


• Maintain accountability for meeting established productivity benchmarks (e.g. wRVUS), quality metrics, and institutional performance standards


• Ensure time is allocated in accordance with assigned clinical, surgical, administrative, and academic expectations.

Required Qualifications

• Doctor of Medicine (MD) or Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine (DO) from an accredited medical school


• Completion of an ACGME accredited residency in Orthopedic Surgery


• Completion of fellowship training in Pediatric Orthopedic Surgery and Spinal Surgery


• Must be board certified/eligible by the American Board of Orthopedic Surgery (ABOS) or in final year of ACGME accredited program leading to certification and eligible for or in possession of Subspecialty Certification (SC) if appropriate


• Must possess eligibility for active and unrestricted medical licensure in the state of practice


• Must possess eligibility for active DEA


• Must possess Basic Life Support for Healthcare Providers (BLS for HCP) and Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) certification


• Credentialing and privileging by the medical staff in accordance with hospital bylaws


• Experience treating pediatric patients with complex spinal deformities


• Comprehensive knowledge of pediatric orthopedic surgical techniques, growth and development, and musculoskeletal conditions unique to children.


• Proficiency in operative planning, surgical execution, and perioperative management in pediatric populations.


• Familiarity with pediatric imaging, casting, bracing, and non-operative treatment protocols.


• Effective communication and counseling skills for engaging with pediatric patients and their families.


• Ability to function in a multidisciplinary environment and manage complex care scenarios.


• Competency in use of electronic medical record systems, documentation standards, and clinical decision support tools.
