Job summary

Nexus Children’s Hospital – Shenandoah is seeking a Mental Health Technician (MHT) / Patient Care Assistant (PCA) to provide direct patient care, behavioral support, and supervision for patients with medical and psychiatric conditions. The role creates a safe, therapeutic environment and supports treatment goals to foster recovery and stability.

The position requires a high school diploma, BLS/CPR, and de-escalation training within 30 days of hire, with TB testing per policy.

Qualifications

• High School Diploma or equivalent is required.
• AA/BA/BS in Psychology, Education, Behavioral Health, or related field is preferred.
• BLS/CPR certification required upon hire; de-escalation training must be completed within 30 days of hire; TB test required within 14 days of hire and annually thereafter.

Responsibilities

• Provide care to patients in a manner that promotes safety, dignity, and therapeutic engagement.
• Supervise and monitor patients to ensure structure, consistency, and safety within the unit.
• Observe, document, and report changes in patient behavior, emotional state, or physical condition.
• Assist patients with activities of daily living (ADLs) including bathing, dressing, feeding, and mobility.
• Support daily schedules, activities, and structured treatment programs.
• Implement and reinforce PBIS (Positive Behavior Interventions and Supports).
• Manage and de-escalate crisis situations using approved techniques to ensure safety.
• Collaborate with nurses, physicians, and therapists for coordinated care.
• Participate in community meetings, goal-setting sessions, and therapeutic groups.
• Maintain documentation, confidentiality, and safety/infection control standards.

Education
