Job summary

The University of Iowa Health Care, Department of Nursing, seeks an Assistant Nurse Manager to support the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit, overseeing direct patient care and coordinating nursing teams.

You will hire and evaluate staff, manage budgets, ensure adherence to policies, and lead quality improvement initiatives while collaborating with physicians and educators. This full-time role is on campus at Stead Family Children’s Hospital with weekend/holiday call as required.

Qualifications

• Current license to practice nursing in Iowa
• Minimum 2 years current or recent pediatric critical care nursing
• Certification in Pediatric Critical Care Nursing required by six months of hire
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills
• Proficiency with computer software applications (such as Microsoft programs)

Responsibilities

• Hire or assist in hiring nursing unit staff through effective and timely recommendations
• Develop and manage the talents, strengths and behaviors of assigned staff as directed by nurse manager
• Completes staff evaluations, for assigned staff, on time with written, solid justification
• Assure staff members are compliant with competencies, policies, procedures and regulations
• Understand and apply appropriately the provisions in the union contracts
• Actively help manage operating expenses for the unit by monitoring the unit’s operating budget
• Review financial reports and provide insights to budget variances to nurse leaders
• Recommend budget ideas, resources and cost containment strategies
• Collaborate with nurse leaders to identify Quality Management and patient satisfaction opportunities for improvement
• Implement and maintain standards and quality plans
• Engage staff in meeting plan goals
• Supervise care delivery and assist in coordinating patient care teams on the unit
• Serve as a resource for patient care problems
• May provide some patient care
• Collaborate with nursing leaders to develop and implement unit/clinic or division strategic plans
• Communicate with physicians, staff and other health care providers on a regular basis to promote effective and efficient operations within the unit/clinic
• Communicate with patients, families, and staff to address and resolve issues
• Provide evaluative feedback for staff members and health care students
• Work with clinical instructors/educators to facilitate clinical education experiences
• Support unit evidence based practice research initiatives
