Job summary

Eugene School District 4J is seeking a part-time Physical Education teacher for the 2026/27 school year. The role requires an Oregon PE endorsement and a valid teaching license.

The educator will lead health, wellness, and movement activities, collaborating with school staff to support student fitness in classrooms and across programs. Applicants must hold a Bachelor's degree, Oregon teaching licensure, and have at least one year of PE teaching experience.

Qualifications

  • Must hold a valid Oregon Teaching License with a Physical Education Endorsement.
  • Licenses as determined by the District including a valid Oregon Driver License and ability to obtain CPR/First Aid.
  • At least one year of physical education teaching experience.
  • Experience working with students and the public in a school setting.
  • Ability to communicate fluently in English, written and verbal.

Job description

Position Summary

This is a part-time (0.6 FTE) position starting the beginning of the 2026/27 school year. Anticipated daily schedule: Monday, Wednesday, and Thursday 8am - 4 pm. The above salary references a 1.0 FTE salary.

The physical education teacher is the primary instructional delivery for student health and wellness, and fitness and growth. The educator collaborates with school team members and provides strategies and supports for increasing student movement and fitness within the regular classroom. The position is demanding, varied and complex. The educator must be collaborative, a relationship builder, have excellent communication and interpersonal skills, and be well trained in physical education content knowledge, and effective and engaging teaching strategies.

Essential Functions
  • Demonstrate motivation and enthusiasm with a genuine passion for teaching all learners.
  • Demonstrate the ability to create a student-centered classroom.
  • Facilitates student's physical, cognitive and social and emotional learning through lessons designed to sequentially develop skills appropriate to their ability and confidence levels.
  • Provides engaging, fun, and effective instruction that helps build a health and wellness foundation for students.
  • Teaches knowledge and skills in physical fitness using the Oregon Core Standards.
  • Implements Oregon Core Standards with rigor, purpose, and planning.
  • Provides maximum participation for all students; differentiates as needed to ensure all students experience success.
  • Analyzes, demonstrates, and explains basic skills, knowledge and strategies of games, rhythms, and fundamentals of body movement.
  • Develops engaging and effective lesson plans and supplementary materials.
  • Provides ongoing formative feedback to students.
  • Demonstrates a growth mindset individually and supports this development with all students.
  • Communicates in developmentally appropriate ways through a humane, sensitive approach that clearly communicates that every student, regardless of ability, can succeed and will benefit from a physically active, healthy lifestyle.
  • Implements and supports school-wide programs to include PBIS, Growth Mindset, etc.
  • Collaborates with school team members in providing ideas and support to increase health and wellness, movement and activity within the classroom.
  • Establishes and maintains standards of student behavior to provide an orderly, productive environment in the physical education areas that supports and aligns with the school-wide behavior framework (ie. PBIS).
  • Provides appropriate safety instruction and makes safety checks on equipment and field areas to ensure the overall safety of students.
  • Evaluates academic and social growth of students and keeps appropriate records to include report cards, attendance records, checklists, and other recordkeeping activities as appropriate by level and assigned by supervisor.
  • Communicates with parents, school counselors and administrator on student progress.
  • Focuses on making learning visible through effective student engagement.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
Required Knowledge, Skills And Abilities

  • Education: Must hold an undergraduate degree. Must hold a valid Oregon Teaching License with a Physical Education Endorsement. Licenses as determined by the District including, a valid Oregon Driver License and ability to obtain a valid CPR/First Aid card.
  • Experience: At least one year of physical education teaching experience at the level of application or student teaching. Demonstrated ability to successfully work with students and the public in a school setting. Student teaching also applies.
  • Works well with others from diverse backgrounds. Focuses on solving conflict; maintaining confidentiality; listening to others without interrupting; keeping emotion under control; remaining open to others' ideas and contributing to a positive team spirit.
  • Verifiable ability to work with students of varying levels of readiness.
  • Ability to communicate fluently verbally and in writing in English. Ability to respond to common inquiries or complaints from students, parents, staff or members of the community. Ability to draft simple correspondence and some routine reports. Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules,operating and maintenance instructions and procedure manuals.
  • Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral or diagram form. Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.
  • Proficiency in the usage of database software, internet software, and email.Abilityto proficiently use Google Docs.Ability to type accurately and proficiently. Ability to effectively use Synergy gradebook.
  • Ability to appropriately communicate with students, school team members, parents, members of the community, partners and others including vendors, law enforcement and other agencies.
  • Ability to exercise good judgment and work in an environment with constant interruptions.

  • Valid TSPC License with a Physical Education Endorsement

  • Copy of all college (undergraduate and graduate) transcripts. Unofficial transcripts will be accepted during the application process. If an applicant is hired they will be required to submit official transcripts prior to the start of employment.
  • Three (3) letters of recommendation. Must be from the last 2 years and one letter must be from a supervisor.

Upon offer of employment applicants must obtain a fingerprint clearance from the Oregon State Police Department and the FBI through a process authorized by the Eugene School District 4J. Applicants would be responsible for the one-time fingerprint clearance fee.
