Job summary

UMass Memorial Health is seeking a Patient Care Technician II to provide direct patient care in our hospital setting. Responsibilities include monitoring high‑risk patients, assisting with daily living activities, taking vital signs, and supporting clinical procedures with the nursing team.

The role requires a high school level education, BLS certification, and strong communication in English. Related experience in inpatient/outpatient settings and proficiency with EMR systems are expected.

Qualifications

• Minimum of a high school education or GED with related healthcare experience.
• Current Basic Life Support certification is required or in place.
• Demonstrated competency in PCT II level and inpatient/outpatient care.

Responsibilities

• Provide clear, timely communication to the RN regarding patient observations and changes.
• Maintain constant observation of high‑risk patients as assigned.
• Assist in creating a safe environment and de‑escalation; participate in restraints when trained.
• Assist patients with daily living activities, mobility, meals, and nourishment.
• Move, lift, position, and transport patients with proper safety techniques.
• Perform safety checks and use fall‑prevention devices as directed; follow restraint policy.
• Take vital signs, measure height/weight, and perform tests per hospital standards.
• Collect and prepare specimens for lab transport; phlebotomy as location allows.
• Demonstrate sensitivity to patient needs and build rapport; support emotional needs.
• Execute unit‑specific duties such as equipment checks and proper storage of supplies.
• Assist with treatments and procedures, set up equipment, and provide patient positioning support.
• Monitor intake/output, tube feeding setups, Foley catheters, and ostomy care as directed.
• Answer phones, relay messages, and use intra‑department communication systems.
• Replenish supplies and stay updated with unit changes and communications.

Hiring Range: $15.00 - $25.71 (final offer may vary based on experience, skills, qualifications, and internal equity considerations)

Schedule Details: Holidays – Every Other Holiday (Sunday through Saturday), Weekends – Every Other Weekend

Scheduled Hours: 12:45-9:15P

Shift: 2 – Evening Shift, 8 Hours (United States of America)

Major Responsibilities

1. Provides clear, timely communication to the RN regarding observations and changes seen in patients (e.g., changes in skin condition, vital signs, mental status).
2. Provides constant observation of high‑risk patients as assigned by the Resource Nurse or designee.
3. Participates in the development and maintenance of a safe environment, using interventions to de‑escalate patients and, if unsuccessful, participates in restraints in accordance with training and education as directed.
4. Assists patients with daily living activities such as personal hygiene, ambulation, meals and nourishment.
5. Assists in moving, lifting, positioning, and transporting patients using proper safety techniques and body mechanics.
6. Maintains patient safety by performing safety checks, utilizing fall‑prevention devices/strategies as directed, and following the Restraint Policy for restrained patients.
7. Takes and records vital signs (temperature, pulse, respirations, blood pressure, pulse oximetry) and measures patients’ height and weight.
8. Performs EKGs, point‑of‑care tests, and bladder scans according to hospital standards; collects, labels, and prepares specimens for transport to the lab.
9. Phlebotomy in certain locations.
10. Demonstrates sensitivity and responsiveness to patients’ needs by acting as a source of information and building positive rapport.
11. Performs unit‑specific procedures such as battery changes for telemetry units, checking equipment status, cleaning equipment between patients, and proper storage of supplies.
12. Assists RN or licensed independent practitioner with treatments and procedures by preparing patients, setting up equipment and supplies, and using sterile technique when indicated; helps with patient positioning and emotional support, and cleans up after the procedure.
13. Observes, measures, and records oral food and fluid intake; sets up tube‑feeding solutions and refills bags as directed; empties and records output from Foley catheters, ostomy appliances, and drainage systems; performs ostomy care on established patients as directed.
14. Answers telephone using appropriate etiquette, takes and relays messages, and utilizes intra‑department communication systems such as pagers and intercom.
15. Replenishes patient and unit supplies and equipment.
16. Keeps current with hospital and unit changes by reading communication boards, bulletin boards, posted notices, and UMMHC e‑mails regularly.

Specialties

Unit Secretary – Assists with patient admissions, transfers, and discharge procedures at least 5 shifts (40 hours) every 6 months; administrative responsibilities include log maintenance, organizing patient care charts, and retrieving data from EMR systems.

Remote Video Monitoring – Continuously observes multiple patients using the remote video monitoring system; performs in the Emergency Department, Step Down Unit, ICU, Dialysis, and Hospital at Home.

Telemetry Certified & Step‑Down Unit (Harrington) – Cross‑trained in phlebotomy and telemetry competencies; also functions as unit clerk; may be assigned to areas of higher acuity such as the Step‑Down Unit.

2. Prior inpatient/outpatient care experience or clinical care training.
3. Ability to read, write and communicate in English clearly and concisely.
4. Knowledge of medical terminology.

6. Strong interpersonal skills to gather information, build relationships, and provide exceptional service to patients.
7. Proven problem‑solving abilities for routine situations; seeks assistance when more direction is needed.
8. Ability to remain calm when under stress or in emergency situations.

Unless certification, licensure or registration is required, an equivalent combination of education and experience may be substituted for the above requirements.

Physical Demands and Environmental Conditions

Position requires work indoors in a patient care environment. Hand dexterity, hearing, and vision are necessary to take direction from patients or providers, adjust equipment, observe and describe patient observations. Must be able to lift up to 50 pounds. Work is of heavy demand, standing and walking most of the time with the possibility of pushing heavy equipment and bending frequently.
