Summary
The Patient Care Tech (ED Tech) works primarily in direct patient care, providing compassionate, patient‑centered care to emergency department, observation, and outpatient patients under the direction of physicians and registered nurses. The tech performs a wide range of ancillary and clinical duties, including specimen collection, vital signs, EKGs, stocking supplies, cleaning, transportation, clerical responsibilities, lab collection, respiratory treatments, and assisting with medical procedures and minor surgeries.
Responsibilities
- 40% The tech maintains a friendly, customer‑oriented attitude as part of a multidisciplinary team, treating all patients, families, visitors, staff, and community members with kindness, compassion, respect, and relationship‑based care.
- 30% The tech follows RN direction to perform services within the scope of practice in accordance with physicians’ plans of care and evidence‑based standards, such as minor treatments, answering call lights, assisting with transfers, responding to alarms, and other duties assigned.
- 20% The tech reports treatment effectiveness to the RN and collaborates on updating treatment plans, using current information to improve patient care.
- 10% The tech adheres to all local, state, and federal regulations, guidelines, and MyMichigan Health policies, maintaining professional standards.
- Maintains knowledge of MyMichigan Health ED specific policies and procedures related to care.

Safety

Education

Patient Care
- Collects vital signs and weight.
- Participates in direct patient care, moving, lifting, and transporting patients as required.
- Performs EKGs.
- Performs intravenous access as ordered and within scope, promptly and accurately.
- Performs other clinical and technical aspects of care per established policies.
- Displays a friendly, cooperative manner to the public.
- Maintains a clean, tidy exam room, including inventory of supplies.
- Maintains orderly patient flow.
- Clears equipment.
- Is familiar with cardiac monitors, can apply leads, and operate equipment.
- Assists with emergency equipment and procedures under RN or ED physician supervision.
- Completes required documentation.
- Follows sterile technique during setup and throughout procedures, assisting physicians with all types of procedures.
Quality
- Supports the ED mission, goals, policies, and standards.
- Assists the RN in ensuring patient care outcomes and safety needs are met.
- Communicates identified problems and implements actions to meet patient needs.
- Maintains the unit area according to Joint Commission standards.
- Participates in quality improvement activities.
Secretary
- Performs all clerical duties.
- Answers telephone calls.
- Enters lab orders and other orders as requested.
Assists with Medical Procedures and Minor Surgery
- Assists with all medical procedures and minor surgery.
- Demonstrates knowledge of sterile technique.
Emergency Care/Safety
- Maintains Health Care Provider certification as applicable.
- Operates according to procedure in all medical center emergency situations.
- Ensures a safe and secure environment for patients.
- Is familiar with all safety and emergency procedures.
- Observes fall safety precautions.
Ordering and Stocking
- Assists with ordering supplies as indicated.
Revenue and Inventory Management
- Orders from purchasing weekly for medical, lab, and office supplies.
- Handles special invoices for supplies not available in the storeroom.
- Places orders with Pharmacy.
- Stocks exam room supplies and refills hand cleaner bottles.
Infection Prevention and Control
- Maintains the standards of infection prevention and control policies.
- Implements and maintains isolation techniques per policy.
- Follows hand hygiene policies and uses PPE as required.
- Demonstrates competency in Microsoft Windows and may participate in additional learning opportunities.
- Will work on‑call as scheduled.
- All other duties as assigned.
Certifications and Licensures
- Team Advanced: Techniques for Effective Aggression Management – equivalent experience within 3 months of hire.
- BLS: Basic Life Support – required within 1 month of hire.
- PCT: MMH PCT/CNA/EMT/LPN Certification – must hold an internal MyMichigan Health Patient Care Technician certification or an equivalent credential, as described in the detailed specification.
- Fingerprinting – required.
Education Required
- High School Diploma or GED.
Experience, Training, and Skills
- Current Emergency Medical Technician licensed in Michigan, RN aide certification, nursing student status, or completion of a state‑approved nursing aide training course.
- Organizational skills to prioritize workload.
- Interpersonal skills for effective communication with individuals and groups.
- Knowledge and competence in treating patients from prenatal to 100+ years of age.
Physical/Mental Requirements and Typical Working Conditions

- Be able to move freely within the facility, with or without an assistive device.

- Exposure to blood‑borne pathogens and other infectious materials is possible.
