Descripción del empleo

As we continue to grow our team, Firefly is searching for a hands-on PCB Repair and Failure Analysis Engineer to own board-level quality across our contract-manufactured electronics. In this role, you will drive root cause on production issues, recover boards through rework, and help make sure every board that reaches integration is one we can trust.

You will be the bridge between our engineering team and our contract manufacturers. When a board fails, you will find out why, with evidence, and separate process and design causes from random part failure. You will work hands-on at the bench and under the microscope, and alongside our suppliers, to turn findings into corrective actions and design-for-manufacturing improvements that hold up in the builds that follow.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Perform failure analysis on production boards, separating process and design causes (solder paste, reflow profile, stencil, footprint, stackup, handling, ESD) from random part failure, backed by evidence.
  • Read and interpret Gerbers, fabrication and assembly drawings, schematics, and BOMs to trace failures to their source.
  • Work with our contract manufacturers on process data, X-ray and cross-section requests, and closure of corrective actions.
  • Write clear 8D-style failure analysis reports that our fabrication and assembly partners can act on.
  • Set up and own incoming inspection, including sampling plans, visual and AOI acceptance criteria, functional test checks, and lot-level defect tracking.
  • Feed design-for-manufacturing (DFM) changes back to the engineering team so fixes are built into future board revisions.
  • Rework and repair boards using hot air and microsoldering, including BGA, QFN, and fine-pitch components.
  • Debug boards with an oscilloscope, multimeter, bench supply, and thermal camera to isolate the failing component or joint.
  • Develop and document repair procedures, and make sound rework-or-scrap decisions.
Requirements:
  • 3+ years of experience in PCB failure analysis, board repair, or electronics manufacturing/quality engineering.
  • Demonstrated root-cause work on production defects.
  • Comfortable reading Gerbers, schematics, and BOMs in Altium, KiCad, or similar tools.
  • Strong rework and soldering skills under a microscope.
  • Hands-on board-level debug experience with an oscilloscope and multimeter.
  • Clear, supplier-facing technical writing.
  • Able to work on-site at our Auburn Hills, Michigan facility.
Bonus Points:
  • IPC-A-610, IPC-7711/7721, or J-STD-001 certification.
  • Contract manufacturer management or supplier quality experience.
  • Experience with drones, RC, or battery-powered embedded hardware (power stages, RF, GNSS, ESCs).
  • Experience with X-ray inspection, cross-sectioning, and SPC/Pareto analysis.
  • BSEE or EET degree, or equivalent hands-on experience.
  • Relocation Assistance: We offer financial support to help with your move, ensuring a smooth transition as you join our team.
  • Comprehensive Health Benefits: We cover 100% of health insurance premiums for our employees.
  • Retirement Plan: We offer a Simple IRA with employer contributions to help you plan for your future and grow your retirement savings.
