Job summary

The University of Texas Medical Branch in Galveston, TX is seeking a Surgery Scheduler to coordinate operating rooms and schedules for surgeons and staff. You will collect and analyze data on surgical cases and OR availability to maximize efficiency and patient care.

Essential duties include assigning operating suites, coordinating patient placements with clinical teams, performing detailed data entry, and maintaining strict patient confidentiality.

Qualifications

• Bachelor degree with 1 year experience or High School diploma or equivalent with 3 years clerical or customer service experience.

Responsibilities

• Identify and assign operating suites for all surgical cases in conjunction with various suite capabilities and available clinical staff.
• Facilitate patient assignments and communicate regularly with the clinical operations staff on placement issues so they can be addressed promptly.
• Perform data entry of patient accounts, including procedure description and code, region, laterality, anesthesia type, Surgeon, service, and pre‑op diagnosis.
• Answer calls and provide high level customer service in all interaction with customers.
• Maintain patient confidentiality regarding access to patient and other clinical information via email, computer, and fax.
• Address concerns of clinical teams and provide recovery and escalate issues to appropriate chain of command as needed.
• Monitor case durations and make appropriate adjustments to ensure accurate scheduling.
• Ensure financial authorization of scheduled elective cases. Work with financial team to elevate clearance on necessary patients.
• Provide department leadership updates regarding placement needs.

Tasked with maintaining balanced operations between nursing services, anesthesia, faculty/community surgeons, and available equipment.
