Job summary

Barrett Business Services Inc. (BBSI) is seeking a Payroll Senior Tax Analyst to manage multi-state payroll tax responsibilities for clients nationwide.

You will file returns, ensure compliance, manage registrations, resolve tax issues, and collaborate with Payroll, Accounting, Legal, and Client Service teams. A background in tax software and strong Excel skills are essential.

Qualifications

  • 2-5+ years of multi-state payroll tax experience (PEO, payroll provider, or large employer preferred).
  • Strong knowledge of federal, state, and local payroll tax regulations including FUTA, SUTA, withholding taxes, and local taxation.
  • Experience with payroll tax software such as Prism, MasterTax, or similar platforms.
  • Advanced Microsoft Excel skills with experience analyzing and reconciling large datasets.
  • Excellent analytical, organizational, and problem-solving abilities.
  • Strong communication skills across departments and with government agencies.

Responsibilities

  • Manage employer registrations, tax account maintenance, and jurisdiction setup.
  • Research and resolve complex payroll tax issues, agency notices, audits, and account discrepancies.
  • Reconcile tax payments, liabilities, and general ledger accounts.
  • Partner with Payroll, Accounting, Legal, and Client Service teams to provide expert payroll tax guidance.
  • Support new client onboarding, tax setup, and multi-state compliance.
  • Help improve processes through automation, documentation, system enhancements, and continuous improvement initiatives.
  • Stay current on federal, state, and local payroll tax legislation and implement necessary changes.

Our Corporate Payroll Tax team is expanding, and we're looking for an experienced Payroll Senior Tax Analyst to help ensure payroll tax compliance for clients across the country. What You'll Do

As a Payroll Senior Tax Analyst, you'll manage a wide range of multi-state payroll tax responsibilities, including:

  • Prepare, reconcile, and file federal, state, and local payroll tax returns for clients in all 50 states.
  • Ensure timely and accurate tax filings, deposits, and compliance with changing regulations.

Required Qualifications
  • 2-5+ years of multi-state payroll tax experience (PEO, payroll provider, or large employer preferred)

Preferred Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, Business, or a related field
  • Certified Payroll Professional (CPP) or Fundamental Payroll Certification (FPC)
  • Experience with agency portals such as FRANCES, EDD, Washington L&I, MyUI+, or similar
  • Knowledge of PEO payroll tax compliance and client-level registrations

Salary and Other Compensation

The starting salary for this position is between 85-100K base. Factors which may affect starting pay within this range may include geography, skills, education, experience, certifications, and other qualifications of the candidate.

Paid Time Off

Accrued sick leave of 1 hour for every 40 hours of work, with maximum based on state or regional requirements; vacation accrues up to 80 hours in the first year, up to 120 hours in years 2-4, and up to 160 hours in the fifth year; 6 paid holidays annually, 4 paid volunteer days annually.
