Job summary

Whatnot in the United States is seeking a Data Engineer to build scalable data systems powering data-driven decisions across payments, finance, and growth.

You will own end-to-end data architectures and mission-critical pipelines, partnering with cross-functional teams to ensure reliable data products and insights.

We offer flexibility to work from home or from our hubs in New York, Seattle, Los Angeles, and San Francisco; candidates should be within commuting distance of these hubs.

Qualifications

• Minimum 7+ years building data warehouses, distributed data systems or event-driven architectures.
• Ability to design data models for analytical and transactional workloads.
• Hands-on with ingestion (Kafka, Debezium), transformation (dbt, Spark, Flink), orchestration (Dagster, Airflow) and observability (Monte Carlo, Great Expectations).
• Experience with Snowflake, BigQuery or Redshift in cloud data warehouses.
• Proficient in production-grade Python or SQL and CI/CD plus infrastructure-as-code workflows.
• Collaborates across engineering, product, and analytics to translate requirements into robust data systems.
• Thrive in a fast-moving environment, owning both technical design and operational outcomes.

Responsibilities

• Own data architecture end-to-end: capture, model and serve critical business data with scalable storage and compute.
• Build and operate streaming and batch data pipelines handling high-volume events with latency and accuracy guarantees.
• Design canonical models and enforce data contracts across teams.
• Ensure data quality with tests, lineage, monitoring, and reconciliation at scale.
• Automate workflows with cross-team collaboration to reduce manual handoffs.
• Enable insights and experimentation by providing high-quality data through semantic layers and APIs.
