Summary

The Transporter works under general supervision to Patient Transport Manager, Administrative Supervisor and Operations Supervisor. The Transporter ensures that established safety procedures are followed throughout the transportation process. Monitors the proper functioning of all transportation equipment on a daily basis. Knowledge of patient safety, basic transportation equipment, infection control processes, clerical skills, excellent telephone etiquette, and good communication and organizational skills.

This is 2nd shift starting between Noon and 2 PM. Hours worked after 5 PM paya shift differential. This role will require working some weekends and Holidays.

Experience and Education

  • High school graduation or GED required.
  • Six (6) months customer service experience preferred.
  • Basic Life Support (BLS), course accredited by the American Heart Association (AHA) or American Red Cross (ARC) by the first day of employment is required.

Job Duties

  • Maintains friendly, efficient service attitude towards patients, clients and co-workers.
  • Follows all department and hospital policies and procedures and to promote patient care.
  • Provides transportation of patients and items to various areas of the institution to facilitate patient care.
  • Safely moves patients with traction, IV’s, drainage apparatus, oxygen and other encumbrances.
  • Greets patients and family members professionally and identifies oneself.
  • Verifies patient identification, using two methods (patient name and patient date of birth).
  • Explain where patient is going.
  • Maintains patient/family confidentiality (HIPPA).
  • Participates in teaching of patients and families.
  • Provides appropriate information regarding transport.
  • Maintains skills and training as necessary to provide required service.
  • Transports patient using appropriate equipment, transfer techniques, and procedures to ensure patient safety.
  • Recognizes emergency situations, records unusual conditions, and initiates code procedures if needed.
  • Arrives to meetings on time and participates in Monthly Meetings and/or educational activities.
  • Ensures that the customer departments are notified of delays, cancellations, and changes in the mode of transportation, as appropriate.
  • Relays this information to the dispatcher in a timely manner.
  • Knows the locations within the hospital facility and uses safe, efficient routes to and from all locations.
  • Follows dispatcher’s instructions as assigned and accurately logs trips as required.
  • Maintains proper cleanliness of equipment and reports equipment-needing repairs.
  • Transports bodies to the morgue in a timely manner and ensures completion of proper documentation.
  • Ability to answer questions from patients, guests, and vendors.
  • Directs these inquiries (as necessary) to appropriate channels in a professional way.
  • Ability to train new employees, providing day-to-day job assistance; teaching and coaching new transporters on Patient Transport policies and procedures, as well as Infection
  • Control guidelines and Customer Relations skills.
  • Uses proper codes and etiquette while communicating on phones.
  • Follows proper department policy regarding phones by keeping phones clean, charged and secure.
  • Reports to work on time and as scheduled; completes work within designated time.
  • Must be able to work a flexible schedule, including weekends and holidays.
  • Complies with dress code and uniform standards for department.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Working Conditions

  • Work is performed primarily in a hospital or hospital clinic environment.
  • Requires standing, walking for long period of time and must be able to lift, push, and pull heavy equipment.
  • Requires walking, bending, pushing, stooping and lifting objects up to 50 pounds.
  • Please Note: You may be required to transport Covid-19 suspected and/or positive patients. You will be provided with appropriate Personal Protective Equipment (PPE). The required PPE will involve a Fit Test. Proper fitting may necessitate trimming or shaving facial hair because beard growth or facial hair prevents a necessary seal between the respirator and the face.

Security

Any qualifications to be considered as equivalents in lieu of stated minimum require prior approval of Vice President for Human Resources Administration or his/her designee.

This position is security-sensitive and subject to Texas Education Code §51.215, which authorizes UT Southwestern to obtain criminal history record information.
