Summary:

The Communication Specialist (CS) coordinates communication among a multidisciplinary team to ensure timely and safe patient transfers into and out of Children's Health System of Texas (CHST). They facilitate communication with multiple physicians regarding transfers or consultations and manage system-level bed coordination to ensure patients are placed appropriately with the necessary resources. The CS maintains records of transfers in the electronic health record and documents patient information accurately.

Responsibilities:
  1. Coordinate with CHST and referral healthcare organizations to facilitate effective communication during patient transfers. This includes responding to transfer requests, collecting demographic data, contacting physicians, coordinating transport services, and ensuring closed-loop communication.
  2. Serve as a Bed Planner for system-level bed management, using protocols to assign appropriate locations and coordinate medical acceptance through direct physician contact.
  3. Collaborate with the Bed Assignment Coordinator and Bed Manager to assign beds and transfer patients within the system and from the community.
  4. Utilize medical knowledge to ensure the correct physician is contacted for acceptance or consultation and provide ongoing patient management recommendations prior to arrival.
  5. Train and educate new communication specialists, support quality improvement programs, participate in hospital committees, and assist in staff recruitment and evaluation.
Work Experience:

At least 1 year of related experience required.

Education:

High school diploma or equivalent required; additional training beyond high school preferred. Completion of a paramedic or EMT program with licensure or certification required.

Licenses and Certifications:

Texas LP, Texas EMT-P, or Texas EMT upon hire required. Basic Life Support for Healthcare Providers required upon hire.
