Job summary

Atrium Health Floyd is seeking a motivated Patient Services Representative I to greet patients, handle registrations, verify demographics and insurance, and collect patient liabilities. The role supports financial clearance workflows and referrals to financial counseling as needed.

The position requires strong communication, multitasking in a high-volume setting, and proficiency with MS Office and ADT systems. Work is performed in an on-site ophthalmology department with standard hours.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or GED; patient access experience preferred.
  • Experience with Medicare, HIPAA, EMTALA rules and insurance pre-certification requirements.
  • Strong communication, math, and data interpretation skills.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Outlook, Word and Excel; familiarity with ADT systems.

Responsibilities

  • Greet patients and manage patient flow efficiently.
  • Verify and update patient demographics and insurance information.
  • Complete walk-in registrations and assist with financial clearance.
  • Collect and calculate patient financial liability; collect balances.
  • Refer patients to Financial Counselor when needed.
  • Close visits: schedule follow-ups and collect payments.
  • Know Medicare/Medicaid rules and third-party payer requirements.
  • Maintain professional relations with patients and staff; communicate issues to management.
  • Meet productivity and accuracy targets; support process improvements.

Major Responsibilities
  • Greetspatients arriving for their appointments.Monitors patientflow to ensure patients are cared for in the most efficient and courteous manner.
  • Ensures all patient demographic and insurance information is complete andaccurate
  • Completes the registration process on walk-in patients, verifies and / or updates patient demographic and insurance information if changes or additions have occurred
  • insurance benefits.Obtains,calculatesand collects the patient’sout of pocketfinancial liability.Requests and collects past due and present balances or estimates due
  • Follows the Financial Clearance policy for non-urgent patient services if financialclearance hasnot been completed or authorization has not been obtained, when appropriate

  • Performs visit closure, including but not limited to checking out patients, scheduling follow-up appointment(s), collectingadditionalpatient responsibility (when applicable) and providing patient withappropriate documents.
  • Maintains knowledge of and reference materials of the following: Medicare, Medicaid and third-party payer requirements, guidelines and policies, insurance plansrequiringpre-authorization/referral and a list of current accepted insurance plans.
  • Proactively communicates issues involving customer service and process improvement opportunities to management
  • Meets productivity requirements to ensure excellent service is provided to customers
  • Meets or exceeds performance expectations of 98% accuracy rate and established department productivity measurements.

The Patient Services Representative I (PSR) is responsible for completing patient registration duties including but not limited to collecting and validating accurate patient demographic and insurance information, obtaining pre-certification or authorization as required, and entering all necessary information into system. The PSR is responsible for informing the patient of their estimated liability, collecting patient liabilities, identifying patients in need of financial assistance and referring patients to financial counseling as necessary. This position requires multi-tasking and effective problem solving skills. It is expected that the PSR will foster positive relationships with all patients in an effort to provide quality service.
