Job summary

Nationwide Children’s Hospital in Columbus, OH seeks a Patient Safety Assistant to provide direct observation for patients on Suicide/Self Destructive Behavior and other high-need cases, ensuring safety for patients and staff. The role involves 1:1 supervision, frequent safety checks, documentation, and assisting with admissions/discharges under an RN.

Strong communication, self-control in volatile situations, and crisis-management training are required.

Qualifications

  • Must have good communication skills.
  • Must be able to exercise self-control in potentially volatile situations.
  • Must be able to work and concentrate amidst distractions.
  • Demonstrates promptness and consistency in meeting scheduled work commitments.
  • Experience in Behavioral Health setting preferred.
  • Current CPR certification - BLS for Healthcare Provider required.

Responsibilities

  • Provides 1:1 supervision of patients in room or through direct observation to ensure safety.
  • Performs regular environmental safety checks and monitors patient environment.
  • Completes required charting and paperwork; participates in admissions and discharges.
  • Attends unit conferences as requested and supports daily operations.
  • Assists with activities of daily living and escorts patients at all times.
  • Acts as a preceptor for orientation and training of PSA staff.
  • Maintains a safe and clean environment; reinforces safety plans with patients.

Overview:Job Description Summary:Provides direct observation of patients placed on Suicide/Self Destructive Behavior or other patients requiring constant attendance, in order to provide maximum protection of both patients and staff.Job Description:Essential Functions:Performs regular checks of the patient environment to maintain safety and observes patient for behaviors.Provides alert observation through sitting as a 1:1 supervision in patient room; camera monitoring 7 or more patients at one time, or completing every 15-minute safety checks for 4 or more patients. Participates in unit conferences as requested.Receives assignment and handoff from charge nurse or nurse in charge of patient prior to entering patient room. Completes required charting or paperwork. Assists with Admission & Discharge Process as directed by unit RN.Completes unit/room orientation; reinforces information given to patients. Assists with activities of daily living according to practitioner order.
