Job summary

Samaritan Health Services in Newport, Oregon is seeking a Patient Safety Assistant to support nursing staff in the Emergency Department. Under the direction of an RN, you will assist with patient care, monitor at-risk patients, and report changes in condition promptly to the RN.

The ideal candidate has completed SHS Patient Safety Assistant training, holds Healthcare Provider BLS, and is eager to work in a fast-paced clinical setting. High school diploma or equivalent is preferred.

Qualifications

  • Healthcare Provider BLS certification required.
  • High school diploma or equivalent preferred; prior medical setting experience is a plus.

  • Assist with patient care under the direction of the RN.

  • Support Emergency Department operations through patient monitoring and safety risk management.

Provides constant observation of patients who are confused, at risk for causing injury to themselves or others, or whose behavior is unpredictable or difficult to manage. Reports changes in patient condition immediately to the RN.

  • Under the direction of the RN assists with patient care in accordance with scope of responsibility and competencies. Provides constant observation of patients who are confused, at risk for causing injury to themselves or others, or whose behavior is unpredictable or difficult to manage. Reports changes in patient condition immediately to the RN.
DEPARTMENT DESCRIPTION
  • The Emergency Department provides care for patients with a wide variety of needs from non-critical to emergent medical conditions including emergent and urgent mental health care. All patients are welcome whether walking in or arriving by emergency transport. All Emergency Department staff are certified to care for critical cardiac and trauma patients including children.
EXPERIENCE/EDUCATION/QUALIFICATIONS
  • Successful completion of SHS Patient Safety Assistant training program or equivalent required.
  • Healthcare Provider BLS required.
  • High school diploma or equivalent preferred.
  • Previous practical experience in a medical setting preferred.
KNOWLEDGE/SKILLS/ABILITIES
  • Time Management: Ability to organize, plan and prioritize work to complete within required time frames and to follow-up on pending issues. Ability to perform multiple tasks simultaneously and thrive in dynamic fast-paced environments and under pressure.
  • Social Perceptiveness: Ability to work with a diverse population from pediatrics to geriatrics. Basic understanding of age-related differences in caring for and/or communicating with patients and caregivers. Possess personal sensitivity to the needs and experiences of others and a non-judgmental attitude towards persons of differing standards, values, lifestyles, and ages.
  • Communication: Effective written and oral communication skills to explain complex issues, exchange information between team members, and tactfully discuss issues.
