Qualifications

  • High School graduate or GED required.
  • At least 1 year of physician practice experience.
  • On-site training of at least one week will be provided.
  • Prefer experience in a medical office setting with scheduling systems.

Responsibilities

  • Greet patients in person or by phone and update demographic and insurance data.
  • Verify insurance and ensure physician accepts the presented plan.
  • Notify staff about patient arrival and prepare medical records for the physician.
  • Process HIPAA paperwork and related forms as needed.
  • Collect referrals or authorizations and monitor waiting room status.
  • Collect co-pays and provide receipts per cash-control processes.
  • Schedule follow-up appointments and guide patients on medical records requests.
  • May perform simple charge entry or process payments; duties are mutually exclusive.
  • Answer calls for the practice and schedule appointments.
  • Adhere to HIPAA and PHI handling requirements; may make reminder calls.

Job description

The Patient Coordinator I greets and establishes first contact with patients, or performs in a call center capacity. Confirms and updates patient demographics and verifies insurance as necessary to ensure that patients have appropriate insurance for physician they are seeing.

  1. 1. Greet patients either in person or via telephone, and update their insurance/demographics in the practice management system.
  2. 2. Assure that physician accepts insurance that patients present with. If not already done prior to visit, verify insurance prior to patients arrival or at minimum at time of arrival before visit.
  3. 3. Communicate with appropriate staff regarding patients arrival, and ensure that patients medical record is available for physician.
  4. 4. Process/update HIPAA-related paperwork and other institutional forms as necessary.
  5. 5. Collect or retrieve referrals or insurance authorizations as required.
  6. 6. Review status of waiting room on a routine basis and ensure that patients are kept advised of wait times.
  7. 7. Ensures that patient has paid co-pay or collects co-pay under direction of billing staff, providing patient with receipt following established cash-control processes.
  8. 8. May schedule patient for follow-up appointment as needed. Provide patient with guidelines for requesting medical records, if necessary.
  9. 9. May perform simple charge entry tasks or enter payments collected from patients and prepare Cashiers deposit. Note: duties are mutually exclusive and may not be performed by the same employee.
  10. 10. Performs in a call center capacity (Faculty Practice Associates)
  11. 11. Answer phones for practice and schedule appointments
  12. 12. Follow all HIPAA and any other governmental or state agency requirements regarding the appropriate handling of PHI documents.
  13. 13. May initiate reminder phones calls for next day appointments.
  14. 14. Performs other related duties
  • High School graduate/GED.
  • 1 year physician practice experience
  • Must have a minimum of one week training on-site which will be provided by practice.
  • Prefer experience in a medical office setting, utilizing a computer system for physician scheduling
Compensation Statement

The Mount Sinai Health System (MSHS) provides salary ranges that comply with the New York City Law on Salary Transparency in Job Advertisements. The salary range for the role is $17.29 - $25.91 Hourly. Actual salaries depend on a variety of factors, including experience, education, and operational need. The salary range or contractual rate listed does not include bonuses/incentive, differential pay or other forms of compensation or benefits.
