Job summary

UPMC Williamsport is seeking a full-time Patient Care Technician to join the TJU Acute Care Unit. The night shift runs 6:30 p.m. to 7:00 a.m., with a 36-hour work week and every other weekend plus rotating holidays.

The PCT plays a key role in patient-centered care alongside nurses and other clinicians. The role involves assisting with ADLs, monitoring vital signs, collecting specimens, and helping maintain a safe, clean environment.

Qualifications

Responsibilities

• Assist patients with bathing, feeding, toileting, ambulating, transporting, turning, and repositioning.

• Maintain competency in at least one advanced skill (e.g., phlebotomy, IV removal, EKGs).
• Report equipment malfunctions to the appropriate department.
• Support unit activities by responding to call bells and delivering meals.
• Communicate learning needs to nursing leadership and plan priorities accordingly.
• Demonstrate cultural sensitivity and promote safety in the health care setting.
• Provide instruction to patients and families under RN direction.
• Apply and monitor patient restraints per physician orders.
• Document patient care in medical records according to procedures.
• Follow medication-access guidelines with access limited to nursing staff.

Responsibilities

• Perform UPMC nursing core assistant responsibilities, including assisting patients with bathing, feeding, toileting, ambulating, transporting, turning, and repositioning.
• Complete point-of-care testing, including blood glucose testing, weights, vital signs, intake and output (I&O), telemetry monitor application/reapplication, and hospital-acquired condition and patient safety indicator responsibilities.
• Perform simple dressings, placement and removal of restraints, bladder scans, specimen collection, and intra-hospital patient transportation.
• Achieve and maintain competency in at least one advanced skill based on department operational needs. Advanced skills may include phlebotomy/venipuncture, peripheral IV removal, indwelling Foley catheter removal, basic arrhythmia recognition, 12-lead EKGs, and NG tube clamping and removal.
• Report equipment malfunctions to the appropriate department.
• Support unit activities by responding to call lights and telephones, passing meal trays, and transporting patients.
• Communicate learning needs to the unit director or direct leader and request assistance with planning and prioritizing activities as needed.
• Demonstrate an understanding of cultural diversity, workplace safety, horizontal violence, and impairment in the health professions.
• Provide instruction to patients and their families under the direction of the RN.
• Apply, monitor, and remove patient restraints according to physician orders and hospital protocols.
• Document patient care in the medical record according to established procedures.
• Follow appropriate medication-access guidelines, with access limited to distributing medications to the nurse.
• Perform duties in accordance with system-wide competencies and behaviors.
• Perform other duties as assigned.
