Job summary

Medical University Hospital Authority (MUHA) is seeking a Patient Care Technician (PCT) to support a decentralized, patient-centered approach to care under the supervision of a Registered Nurse. The role requires assisting with multi-skilled tasks to help achieve positive patient outcomes.

Hours per week are 36 on a rotating 12-hour shift schedule, including weekends and holidays. A high school diploma or equivalent is required or higher education/credentials as outlined for PCT II, with BLS

Under the direct supervision of a Registered Nurse, the PCT performs multi-skilled activities to support a decentralized patient-centered approach to patient care and achieve desired outcomes.


Minimum Training and Education


  • Patient Care Technician I: High School Diploma or equivalent required.

  • Patient Care Technician II: High school diploma/GED and ONE of the following requirements must be met. Associate or Bachelor's degree At least 1 year work experience in a .6 FTE PCT I position at MUSC CHS 1 year of experience in a healthcare facility Active enrollment in nursing school with completion of Nursing Fundamentals from an accredited institution Active enrollment in a healthcare related field from an accredited institution Certified Nursing Assistant or Certified Medical Assistant Certification from an accredited institution


Required Licensure, Certifications, Registrations


  • Basic Life Support required within 2 weeks of hire. Thereafter, must maintain Current Basic Life Support (BLS), either a certification from an American Heart Association (AHA) BLS for Healthcare Providers (or AHA recognized equivalent) or an American Red Cross CPR/AED for Professional Rescuer and Healthcare Provider.

For every 100 additional pounds, assistance will be required from another healthcare worker. 20 lbs. of force is needed to push a 400 lb. patient in a wheelchair on carpet. 25 lbs. of force is required to push a stretcher with a patient with one hand.
