MyMichigan Health is seeking a Student Resource Patient Care Technician in an accredited nursing program. The position provides observation for patients who require close monitoring and reports to a unit or department leader with director oversight.

Under the direction of the RN, you will assist with ambulation, accompany patients during transport, and help with meals if directed. You will maintain a safe environment, document observations, and communicate significant changes promptly to the RN,

Qualifications

  • Interpersonal skills to communicate successfully with individuals and groups at all levels.
  • Competency in Microsoft Windows.

Responsibilities

  • As directed by the RN: provides standby assistance during patient ambulation, accompanies the patient when being transported to other departments; assists the patient with tasks that aren’t required to be performed by the RN or Care Assistant such as assisting with meals if directed by RN.
  • Maintains a calm, clean, and safe environment. Follows appropriate safety precautions and PPE utilization while observing the patient. Maintains confidentiality.
  • Documents observations accurately and timely as directed by the RN.
  • Immediately communicates significant information to the RN such as changes in the patient’s behavior or condition. Follows emergency procedures in the event of any emergency situation such as an accident, injury or significant change in the patient’s condition.
  • Remains awake, alert, calm, and professional, staying in constant view of the patient at all times and focused on the patient at all times.
  • Does NOT take independent action with patients. Tasks must be directed or approved by the RN.
  • Other duties as assigned by the RN or management leader.

Summary

Student Resource Patient Care Technician role is a program for qualified nursing students in an accredited nursing program. The Patient Care Technician is an entry‑level position providing observation for patients who require close continuous observation for protection from harm. Employees report directly to a unit or department leader; the director provides high‑level oversight.

Responsibilities
  • (25%) As directed by the RN: provides standby assistance during patient ambulation, accompanies the patient when being transported to other departments; assists the patient with tasks that aren’t required to be performed by the RN or Care Assistant such as assisting with meals if directed by RN.
  • (25%) Maintains a calm, clean, and safe environment. Follows appropriate safety precautions and PPE utilization while observing the patient. Maintains confidentiality.
  • (20%) Documents observations accurately and timely as directed by the RN.
  • (20%) Immediately communicates significant information to the RN such as changes in the patient’s behavior or condition. Follows emergency procedures in the event of any emergency situation such as an accident, injury or significant change in the patient’s condition.
  • (10%) Remains awake, alert, calm, and professional, staying in constant view of the patient at all times and focused on the patient at all times.
  • Does NOT take independent action with patients. Tasks must be directed or approved by the RN.

Certifications and Licensures
  • BLS: Basic Life Support (Credential; Equivalent Experience: Within 1 month of hire or transfer).
  • PCT (MMH PCT/CNA/EMT/LPN Certification). Required for new hires or transfers; must hold internal MyMichigan Health Patient Care Technician certification or complete one semester of nursing clinical education by an accredited registered nurse program. Also acceptable: current State of Michigan registry as a Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA), completion of EMT certification, completion of an accredited Licensed Practical Nurse program, or Medical Assistant credentials such as RMA, CMA, or equivalent.
Required Education

High School Diploma or equivalent.

Physical and Mental Requirements
  • Exposure to stressful situations, public contact, trauma, grief, and death.
  • Ability to wear personal protective equipment that includes latex materials or appropriate substitutes.
  • Able to move freely about facility with or without an assisted device.
  • Requires vision and hearing with or without assisted devices.
  • Frequently required to sit/stand/walk for long periods of time. May require stooping, kneeling or crouching.
  • Exposure to bloodborne pathogens and other potentially infectious material; must follow bloodborne pathogen and TB testing.
  • Ability to handle multiple tasks, work independently, maintain regular attendance, remain awake.
  • Dexterity for handling, reaching, grasping, fingering; repetitive movements.
  • Physical Demand Level: Medium. Must lift or carry 21‑50 lbs 0‑33% of day; 20 lbs 34‑66% of day; and 10 lbs 67‑100% of day for walking/standing/pushing/pulling.
