Job summary

Qualifications

Responsibilities

• Insert/remove Foley catheters and manage safety reporting under RN supervision.

Norfolk, VA – Third (Nights)

Overview

Sentara Norfolk General Hospital is hiring a Patient Care Technician (PCT) for the Transitional Care Unit. This is a Full Time, Night Shift (12-hour shift) position. Hours: 7PM-7AM - Three 12-hour shifts (36 hours/week) with rotating weekends.

Department Overview

The rehabilitation nursing unit is a 16-bed medical/surgical unit that specializes in rehabilitation. Common diagnoses include, but are not limited to: CVA, spinal cord injury, amputations, major multiple trauma, brain injury, bilateral joint replacement, neurological disorders (i.e. multiple sclerosis, muscular dystrophy, Guillain-Barre Syndrome and Parkinson’s disease), and cardiac/pulmonary disorders, including patients following heart transplants, Left Ventricular Assist Devices and patients with pulmonary hypertension on special medications no longer requiring titration. This unit does not have telemetry monitoring or ventilators.

Responsibilities

The Patient Care Technician (PCT) provides patient care, supports independent and dependent activities of daily living, vital signs, mobility and ambulation, phlebotomy, point of care testing, EKG testing, peripheral IV removal, specimen collection, and foley catheter insertion and removal, and complies with patient safety practices under the direction of the professional RN nurse. Observes patients’ physical, mental, and emotional conditions and documents in a timely and accurate manner while reporting any change to the nurse or medical staff.

Requirements

Education

• High School Diploma or Equivalent (Required)
• Sentara Care Partner Certification Program
• Successful completion of the Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA)
• National Certified Medical Assistant (NCMA)
• National Patient Care Technician (NCPCT)
• Completion of US Navy Hospital Corps School
• Emergency Services to include EMR, EMS, EMT, AEMT and Paramedic
• Current student enrolled in a clinical program (beyond prerequisites) having completed at least one semester of a Registered Nurse (RN), Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN), Respiratory Therapist (RT) or Physical Therapist (PT) program
• Current work experience within the last three years as a Patient Care Technician (PCT) or Nursing Assistant

Certifications / Licensure

• AHA Basic Life Support (BLS) certification within 90 days of hire.

Experience

• One year of health care experience (Preferred).

Compensation

We provide market-competitive compensation packages, inclusive of base pay, incentives, and benefits. The base pay range for full-time employment is $18.93 - $27.41 hourly. Additional compensation may be available for this role, such as shift differentials, standby/on-call pay, overtime, shift premiums, extra-shift incentives, or bonus opportunities. Compensation within the range may vary based on qualifications, experience, location, market conditions, and business needs.
