Carilion Clinic in Roanoke, VA is seeking a Part-time Patient Care Technician for the Pediatrics Unit. You will perform basic nursing care, monitor vitals, assist with activities of daily living, and help coordinate patient flow.
The role requires attending daytime orientation during the first two weeks the unit operates 8 am to 5 pm, Monday through Friday. Experience with EMR, strong communication and teamwork skills are essential.

Carilion Children’s Pediatrics is a 24 bed unit that provides specialized care to patients from birth to 18 years of age. Patient populations consist of general medical and surgical conditions that require inpatient services and also serves as a step down unit when necessary. Direct nursing care is provided by Registered Nurses and Clinical Associates. The patient population consists of, but is not limited to, diabetes, respiratory illness, oncology, general and neurological surgeries, intestinal disorders, seizures, infectious disease, cardiac abnormalities and trauma.
This position is part time, working the day/evening/night shift with every other weekend and rotating.
May be required to support multiple nursing units. Interacts with unit staff, patients, physicians, families, visitors, management, ancillary departments, and the general public. Maintains patient, staff and customer confidentiality. If assigned to perform patient care tasks, must demonstrate knowledge of the principles of growth and development through the life span, possess the ability to recognize and report data reflective of the patient’s status, interpret the appropriate information needed to identify each patient’s requirements relative to his or her age and specific needs, and provide the care needed as described in departmental policies and procedures. May be required to sit with patients on suicide precautions or confusion. Ability to perform responsibilites in a fast-paced environment, requiring use of prioritization and time mangement skills. May be exposed to infectious diseases, biohazardous and hazardous materials, including regulated medical wastes, and combative patients. Prolonged periods of sitting, visualizing computer screen and using keyboard may be necessary. May be required to work at multiple Carilion facilities.
Functions as a key member of the health care team and performs tasks as delegated by licensed staff. Communication: Interacts with unit staff, patients, physicians, families, visitors, management, ancillary departments, and the general public. Confidentiality: Maintains patient, staff and customer confidentiality. Financial Responsibility: Suggests cost containment initiatives in immediate work unit/department. Judgment: High probability that errors in work are detected.
May be exposed to infectious diseases, biohazardous materials and combative patients. Physical requirements include lifting, prolonged periods of standing, bending, pushing, pulling, reaching, and walking.
Education: High school diploma or equivalent education required.
Experience: Previous experience in direct patient care preferred.
Licensure, certification, and/or registration: Certified Nursing Assistant preferred. If employee is working in a critical access facility, a Certified Nursing Assistant is required.
Life Support: AHA BLS-HCP required within 6 months of hire.
Other Minimum Qualifications: Effective interpersonal, communication, and teamwork skills required. Must successfully complete orientation and competency validation for position.
$17.39 - $24.35 Employee pay is based on a variety of factors, including qualifications, credentials, education, and prior work experience. The compensation range does not include benefits or pension plan.
