Job summary

UVA Health in Charlottesville seeks a Patient Care Technician to provide direct, age-appropriate care under the supervision of RNs or licensed practitioners, following medical orders and care plans.

Responsibilities include safe patient handling, routine monitoring, collecting specimens as needed, maintaining a clean and stocked unit, and contributing to patient experience while adhering to ASPIRE values and hospital policies.

Qualifications

• Education: High School Graduate or Equivalent
• Experience: No experience required
• Licensure: AHA Health Care Provider BLS Certification required; for non-certified team members hired prior to May 11, 2026, certification is not required, as relevant experience will be accepted in its place.
• Must have one of the following: Virginia CNA or EMT or Military Corpsman/Tactical Responder or LPN or graduate of certified nursing program or Patient Care Technician Certification (preferred NCCT) or enrolled student nurses with Clinical Experience completed

Responsibilities

• Provide safe and direct care to patients in assigned location, adjusting for age as needed.
• Monitor patients’ conditions and provide updates to the health care team.
• Provide direct and indirect care to meet comfort, personal hygiene, and safety needs.
• Maintain safe, clean, stocked environment to facilitate patient care.
• Obtain and record patient information, collect specimens for diagnostic tests as needed.
• Demonstrate ASPIRE values in all interactions and participate in safety initiatives.

Job description

The Patient Care Technician provides direct, age-specific care to a patient or group of patients based on medical orders and plan of care under the direction of area leadership, RN or licensed independent practitioner.

• Provide safe and direct care to patients in their assigned work location making appropriate age adjustments as needed. Monitor patients’ conditions and provide updates to the health care team.
• Provide direct and indirect care to patients with and without medical/surgical complications to meet their comfort, personal hygiene and safety needs.
• Provide care in accordance with nursing and medical plans of care and deliver per UVA Health Nursing and Hospital policy and procedure.
• Ensure assigned clinical location is maintained as a safe, clean, stocked environment to facilitate meeting patient needs.
• Maintain supplies, educational material, equipment, sterilization of supplies, instruments and the environment to promote quality, safe patient care outcomes (as applicable).
• Contribute to the patient experience by accurately identifying the patient, by observing safety goals and reporting to a licensed independent practitioner, manager and/or Registered Nurses.
• Identifying and reporting physical and mental r esponses posing harm to the Registered Nurse
• Obtain and record initial and ongoing patient information throughout the plan of care , including admissions as outlined by UVA Health policy .
• Obtain or assist in the collection of specimens for diagnostic or waived tests.
• Attend all mandatory in-services and training.
• Ensure patient safety in the performance of job functions and through participation in hospital, department or unit patient safety initiatives.
• Demonstrate ASPIRE Values in all human interactions.
• Demonstrates teamwork in the delivery of patient care.
• Recognizes the importance of time sensitive issues.
• In addition to the above job responsibilities, other duties may be assigned.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

Education: High School Graduate or Equivalent

Experience: No experience required

Licensure: American Heart Association (AHA) Health Care Provider BLS Certification required. For Non-Certified team members hired prior to May 11, 2026, certification is not required , as relevant experience will be accepted in its place.

Must have one of the following:

• Certified Nursing Assistant in the Commonwealth of Virginia
• Emergency Medical Technician in the Commonwealth of Virginia
• Military Corpsmen/Medic ( Combat Medic Specialist / Tactical Combat Casualty Care / Tactical Paramedic ) NREMT certification or Tactical Responder Certification
• LPN license in the Commonwealth of Virginia
• Graduate of a certified nursing program
• P atient C are T echnician Certification , preferred National Center of Competency Testing
• Currently enrolled student nurses who have successfully completed the Clinical Experience and Didactic

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

Job requires frequently bending/stooping and driving (Home Health Aide only) . Proficient communicative, auditory and visual skills; Attention to detail and ability to write legibly; Ability to lift/push/pull 20 - 50lbs and > 100lbs (Home Health Aide only) . May be exposed to chemicals, blood/body fluids and infectious disease.

The pay range for this role is $16.37 - $23.82 hourly. Individual compensation will be determined by the selected candidate's qualifications, previous work experience, and/or education.
