Job description

Fresenius Medical Care (FMCNA) seeks a Hemodialysis Patient Care Technician to support our mission, vision, core values, and customer‑service philosophy. The role is performed under the direct supervision of a licensed nurse and involves patient care, machine operation, maintenance, and clerical duties in line with FMCNA policies and regulatory requirements.

Purpose and Scope

Support FMCNA’s mission and the FMS compliance program. Provide safe and effective dialysis therapy to patients, ensuring high quality processes and patient satisfaction.

Duties and Activities

Customer Service

  • Drive the FMS culture through values and customer‑service standards.
  • Deliver outstanding service to all external and internal customers.
  • Establish and maintain effective relationships through timely communication.
  • Respond promptly to customer‑service issues, resolving and following up as needed.

Patient Care

  • Assist with patient education on adequacy measures and disease processes.
  • Welcome assigned patients and assess well‑being; report observations to the nurse supervisor.
  • Evaluate vascular access for patency and report abnormalities.
  • Obtain pre‑ and post‑treatment vital signs and weight; report unusual findings.
  • Perform vascular access cannulation and report difficulties.
  • Administer heparin as delegated or per state law.
  • Initiate dialysis treatment per prescribed orders, including blood flow and dialysate flow.
  • Evaluate intradialytic problems and provide interventions per physician orders.
  • Monitor patient response to therapy; document vital signs and treatment parameters.
  • Discontinue dialysis per established procedures; assess venous access and apply hemostasis.
  • Record accurate and timely information on Hemodialysis Treatment Sheets and progress notes.
  • Ensure safety alarms are enabled and conduct machine safety checks.
  • Prepare and label all prescribed laboratory samples.

Maintenance / Technical

  • Maintain environmental integrity and cleanliness.
  • Clean, disinfect dialysis machines and surrounding area between treatments.
  • Prepare dialysis machine alarms and pressure holding tests.
  • Initiate Solution Delivery System systems.
  • Clean blood spills with appropriate disinfectants.
  • Organize supplies and equipment to prevent wastage.

Clerical & Administrative

  • Complete CQI activities accurately and timely.
  • Enter treatment data into the designated clinical application.
  • Verify treatment sheets, nursing signatures, and correct omissions.
  • Prepare initial patient charts and compile placement paperwork.
  • Prepare laboratory requisitions and collect samples per specifications.
  • Coordinate specimen collection via appropriate lab courier.

Other

  • Perform additional duties as assigned.
Addendum for Home Programs (Non‑Home Assist)
  • Assist HT RN on home visits, reinforcement of education, scheduling and contact patients regarding appointments.
  • Weigh patient, obtain vital signs, collect treatment records, and notify RN of incomplete records.
  • Prepare treatment room and charts, assist with lab draws, and manage supply inventory.
  • Assist with home machine setup, PD cycler, exit site care, dialysate solution preparation, and supply management.
Physical Demands and Working Conditions

Requires desk work, interaction with patients, travel between facilities, exposure to infectious materials, heavy lifting (up to 30 lbs. frequently, up to 40 lbs. occasionally), frequent standing, and ability to bend over. A separate Ishihara Color Blindness test may be required as a condition of employment; accommodations are considered.

Education
  • High School diploma, GED, or CMS‑approved state/national certification.
  • All required state licensure, education, and training must be met.

  • Successful completion of the FMCNA dialysis training program and CPR certification required.
