Sentara Norfolk General Hospital is seeking a Patient Care Technician (PCT) for the Oncology Unit. This full-time, weekend day shift (12-hour) position runs from 7:00am to 7:00pm, with three 12-hour shifts across Friday to Monday.

The role entails assisting nursing staff with chemotherapy and hospice patients, monitoring vital signs, mobility, and specimen collection in a 36-bed unit and may involve phlebotomy and EKG testing under RN direction.

Qualifications

• Education requirements as listed: High School Diploma or Equivalent and one of the certifications or programs shown.
• Certifications/Licensure include AHA Basic Life Support (BLS) within 90 days of hire.

Responsibilities

• Provide patient care and assist with activities of daily living under RN supervision.
• Monitor and document vital signs, mobility, and ambulation.
• Perform phlebotomy, point-of-care testing, EKG testing, and specimen collection.
• Assist with Foley catheter insertion and removal; IV clearance and safety practices.

Job description

Sentara Norfolk General Hospital is hiring a Patient Care Technician (PCT) for the Oncology Unit. This is a Full Time, Weekend Day Shift (12-hour shift) position.

Hours: 7:00am to 7:00pm - Three 12-hour shifts (36 hours per week between Friday and Monday).

Department Overview

This unit cares for Medical and Surgical oncology patients in an inpatient, 36-bed unit. The unit is both an oncology unit and intermediate care! We are hiring compassionate Patient Care Technicians to support our nursing team with chemotherapy and hospice patients.

The Patient Care Technician provides patient care, supports independent and dependent activities of daily living, vital signs, mobility and ambulation, phlebotomy, point of care testing, EKG testing, peripheral IV removal, specimen collection, and foley catheter insertion and removal, and complies with patient safety practices under the direction of the professional RN nurse. Observes patients' physical, mental, and emotional conditions and documents in a timely and accurate manner while reporting any change to the nurse or medical staff.

Qualifications

Education

• High School Diploma or Equivalent (Required) and one of the following is required:
• Sentara Care Partner Certification Program, or
• Successful completion of the Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA), or
• National Certified Medical Assistant (NCMA), or
• National Patient Care Technician (NCPCT), or
• Completion of US Navy Hospital Corps School, or
• Emergency Services to include EMR, EMS, EMT, AEMT and Paramedic, or
• Current student enrolled in a clinical program (beyond prerequisites) having completed at least one semester of a Registered Nurse (RN), Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN), Respiratory Therapist (RT) or Physical Therapist (PT) program, or
• Current work experience within the last three years as a Patient Care Technician (PCT) or Nursing Assistant.

Certifications/Licensure

• AHA Basic Life Support (BLS) certification within 90 days of hire.

Experience

• One year of health care experience (Preferred).
