First (Days)
The Patient Care Technician provides patient care, supports activities of daily living (both independent and dependent), and performs tasks such as vital signs, mobility and ambulation, phlebotomy, point of care testing, EKG testing, peripheral IV removal, specimen collection, and Foley catheter insertion and removal. They comply with patient safety practices under the supervision of a professional RN. The technician observes patients' physical, mental, and emotional conditions, documents findings accurately and timely, and reports any changes to the medical staff. Basic Life Support (BLS) certification is required within 90 days of hire.
Acceptable programs include: Sentara Care Partner Certification Program, Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA), National Certified Medical Assistant (NCMA), National Patient Care Technician (NCPCT), US Navy Hospital Corps School, Emergency Services (EMR, EMS, EMT, AEMT, Paramedic), or current enrollment in a clinical program (RN, LPN, RT, or PT) with at least one semester completed, or recent work experience within last three years as a PCT or Nursing Assistant. For Safety Partners, de-escalation and physical intervention training must be completed within 30 days of hire (15 days for Behavioral Health).
