Job summary

RWJBarnabas Health is hiring a Patient Care Technician (PCT) for the Med Surg unit in Jersey City. The role involves assisting nurses with daily patient care, taking vital signs, and maintaining patient safety in a fast-paced environment.

The position is part-time with day shifts, Monday through Friday 7am–3:30pm and includes every other weekend and some holidays. Prior CNA experience or nursing program exposure is preferred; BLS is required.

Qualifications

• Current American Heart Association BLS certification required.
• Previous nursing assistant experience or CNA certification preferred.

Responsibilities

• Take vital signs and monitor patient status.
• Assist with activities of daily living and bedside care.

• Follow infection control protocols to ensure patient safety.
• Coordinate care with nurses and other care team members.
• Support with mobility and daily activities as needed.

As a Patient Care Technician (PCT), you will be a vital part of our collaborative nursing team, supporting Registered Nurses in providing hands‑on care and helping create a safe, welcoming environment for patients. You'll assist with daily needs such as vital signs, mobility, and personal care, while helping RNs monitor conditions and carry out care plans. As a Patient Care Technician (PCT), a typical day may include:

• Assisting patients with activities of daily living and providing nursing care to patients including taking vital signs, EKGS, performing phlebotomy, assisting with bedside care, i.e. bathing, mouth care, skin care.
• Monitor vital signs including blood pressure, pulse, respiration, and temperature to track patient health status
• Document patient information accurately in electronic health records (EHR) systems while maintaining strict confidentiality
• Implement infection control protocols to ensure a safe environment for patients and staff, adhering to facility policies
• Communicate effectively with patients, families, and healthcare providers to coordinate care plans and address concerns
• Support emergency response efforts by applying Basic Life Support (BLS) skills such as CPR when needed in acute situations
• Providing patient care, based on physical, education, safety, and related criteria, appropriate to the age of the patients
• Providing for effective and safe patient outcomes through practice, judgment and critical actions
• Ongoing communication with patients and nursing colleagues regarding status of patient's care
• Participating in collaboration of our patient's plan of care from admission to discharge to ensure safe transitioning

To be considered for this PCT opportunity, you must have a High School Diploma / GED and a current American Heart Association BLS certification. Previous nursing assistant experience or clinical experience from an accredited nursing program is preferred or a CNA certificate.
