Job summary

Boston Medical Center (BMC) is seeking a Patient Care Technician for the MedSurg 6 West unit on a 36-hour night schedule. You will be a key member of the care team, performing direct patient care and supportive services under RN supervision.

The role emphasizes patient-centered care, collaboration with the nursing staff, and a NICHE-designated unit focused on geriatric care. A high school diploma, BLS/CPR, and relevant clinical experience or nursing program enrollment are required.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or GED required.
  • Certification in Basic Life Support (BLS), including CPR (current or within 30 days).
  • Ability to pass clinical competency testing.
  • Physical ability to meet job responsibilities.
  • Basic math and computer proficiency.
  • One year of PCT experience in acute hospital setting or current nursing program with clinical rotations.
  • Fluency in another language is a plus.

Responsibilities

  • Perform delegated patient care interventions for MedSurg patients and families.
  • Roles may include obtaining vital signs, bathing, feeding, dressing wounds, hygiene assistance, and emotional support.
  • Perform environmental and inventory tasks to maintain a safe, clean, equipped unit.
  • Contribute to efficient MedSurg operations and quality patient/family outcomes.

ABOUT THE Medical Surgical/6 West DEPARTMENT AT BOSTON MEDICAL CENTER

6 West is a 36 bed medical unit caring for geriatrics, cardiology, and Med/Surge and CCU team general medical patients. 6 West cares for patients on Flolan & Remodulin. These medications are used in the treatment of pulmonary hypertension and Raynaud’s disease. Patients receiving these medications are cared for on 6West as nurses receive specialized training in these medications and pumps. 6W is a designated unit for the Nurses Improving Care for Health System Elders (NICHE) program. The NICHE model is the premiere national geriatric nursing program that addresses the needs of hospitalized older adults. NICHE works to ensure that adults age 65 and over receive care that promotes function, autonomy, and dignity. Position Summary

As a Patient Care Technician in MedSurg, you will be a key member of the healthcare team at BMC. Under the direction and supervision of the registered nurse (RN) and in accordance with hospital policies, procedures, protocols, and standards of practice, our Patient Care Technicians provide direct clinical and support services. Using our patient-centered care model and uplifted by a supportive nursing organization, you will participate in the delivery of care to our patients and their families. You will also work cooperatively with all healthcare team members to provide a variety of support services to meet patient, family, and staff needs.

Job Responsibilities
  • Perform a variety of appropriately delegated patient care interventions for patients in the MedSurg department and their families.
  • Clinical services could include, but are not limited to: obtaining vital signs, bathing and feeding, dressing wounds, assisting with hygiene, cleaning rooms and linens, and emotional support.
  • Perform a variety of environmental and inventory activities to ensure a safe, clean, and appropriately equipped environment for patients, visitors, and staff in the MedSurg department.
  • Contribute to the efficient operation of the MedSurg department ensuring quality patient/family clinical outcomes.
Job Requirements
  • A high school diploma or GED certificate
  • Certification in basic life support (BLS), including CPR certification (must be current or obtained within 30 days of employment)
  • Ability to pass clinical competency testing
  • Physical ability to meet job responsibilities
  • Basic math and computer proficiency
  • One of the following:
  • One year of previous experience as a Patient Care Technician in an acute hospital setting
  • Currently enrolled in a nursing program and have completed two cycles of clinical rotation
  • Completed an approved Patient Care Technician training
  • Completed an approved certified medical assistant training
  • One year of previous experience as an EMT or field medic (considered for adult ED positions only)
  • Fluency in another language a plus
  • Previous medical/surgical experience preferred

Compensation Range

$23.19- $27.17

This range offers an estimate based on the minimum job qualifications. However, our approach to determining base pay is comprehensive, and a broad range of factors is considered when making an offer. This includes education, experience, and licensure/certifications directly related to position requirements.
