Overview

Patient Care Technician - Emergency Services - Per Diem

Base pay range: $17.21/hr - $25.55/hr. Job post indicates eligibility for per diem shifts and provides information on compensation within the posting.

Education, License & Cert

Specific previous phlebotomy experience and/or phlebotomy courses in a phlebotomy program are preferred. Certification highly preferred. Good communication skills including the proper use of grammar and lab technical terms. Previous patient care experience preferred, but not required. Previous phlebotomy experience preferred, but not required.

Essential Functions / Responsibilities

• Performs routine and specialized phlebotomy procedures: venipuncture, skin puncture, assisting with line draws.
• Participates in the delivery of patient care for patients of all age groups under the direction of an RN, including lifting, turning, positioning, toileting, peri care, mobilizing patients, and transfers/ambulation.
• Discontinues IVs and indwelling Foley catheters; provides crutch training and post-mortem care.
• Assists with restraints; stocks department; supports radiology staff during transfers and imaging studies.
• Performs and records specimen collection (urine, stool, sputum) for patients of all ages; instructs patients on proper specimen collection.
• Conducts point-of-care testing (e.g., glucometry) and maintains quality controls in accordance with testing protocol and QA programs.
• Completes EKGs and participates in patient safety and satisfaction initiatives, including patient identification, specimen labeling, and proper documentation.
• Maintains a neat, clean, and safe environment; responds to call bells promptly; reports equipment needs; assists with orientation of new PCTs.
• Participates in performance improvement activities and adheres to hospital/policy standards; maintains patient confidentiality and complies with regulatory requirements.

Other Duties

• Performs errands, transports supplies and patient-related materials, and maintains inventory of department supplies.
• Demonstrates cost-effective care by proper equipment usage and supply charging; supports non-routine assignments within scope of practice.
• Checks e-cylinders/regulators and participates in quality assurance activities.
• Represents the hospital professionally to patients, families, and the healthcare team.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or equivalent; relevant healthcare training or experience preferred.
• Ability to work with patients across all ages; strong communication and teamwork skills.
