Job summary

UPMC in Pennsylvania seeks a Nursing Assistant/Patient Care Technician to support patient procedures, daily living activities, and basic therapies. You will perform core CNA duties and assist with monitoring, documentation, and patient safety.

Requirements include a high school diploma or GED, CNA/PCT experience or enrollment, completion of UPMC PCT class and eRecord training, CPR/CPR preferred, and EMT/Paramedic preferred. Equal opportunity employer.

  • One year of general healthcare experience or six months as a UPMC Nursing Assistant/CNA with 120 days of competency.
  • Enrollment in PT/OT/PA program or related healthcare training with at least one clinical rotation.
  • Successful completion of UPMC Patient Care Technician class and eRecord training.
  • EMT or Paramedic preferred; active enrollment or certification preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Provides patient care, assisting with procedures and activities of daily living.
  • Performs core CNA duties: vitals, I/O, specimens, and Foley care; optional advanced tasks.
  • Reports equipment malfunctions and supports unit activities such as meal distribution and patient transport.
  • Receives feedback, identifies learning needs, and participates in self-review as requested.
  • Provides patient and family instruction under RN direction and may apply/remove restraints as per protocol.
  • Communicates clearly with healthcare team; supports safety and cultural competency in the workplace.
  • Follows patient-care policies and safety protocols, including standard precautions.
  • Supports changes, projects, and quality initiatives; documents in medical records.

Job description

Responsibilities
  • Provides patient care, including assisting with patient procedures and activities of daily living, and supporting physical, respiratory, and cardiopulmonary therapies.
  • Performs the UPMC nursing core nursing assistant responsibilities—blood glucose, weights, vital signs, I/O, specimen collections, and Foley care—and at least four of the following BU‑identified tasks: phlebotomy, 12‑lead ECG, simple dressing, Foley catheter removal, point‑of‑care testing, bladder scan, straight catheter, or IV catheter removal.
  • Assures equipment malfunctions are reported to the appropriate department and contributes to universal unit activities: responding to call lights and telephones, passing meal trays, and transporting patients.
  • Constructively receives feedback, identifies learning needs, takes action to improve performance, and participates in self‑review as requested by the unit director.
  • Provides instruction to patients and families under RN direction, and may apply, monitor, and remove restraints per physician or hospital protocol.
  • Communicates clearly and effectively with all healthcare team members, demonstrates understanding of cultural diversity, horizontal violence, and impairment in health professions, and supports safety in the workplace.
  • Adheres strictly to patient‑care policies, procedures, and safety protocols including standard precautions.
  • Supports departmental changes, project work, and quality initiatives.
  • Documents in the medical record as per established procedures and completes clerical functions as needed.
  • Maintains full competency with UPMC nursing core assistant responsibilities and performs point‑of‑care testing, telemetry monitor application/reapplication, and hospital‑acquired condition & patient safety indicators.
  • In addition to required standard competencies, maintains or achieves competency in at least one advanced skill: phlebotomy/venipuncture, peripheral IV removal, indwelling Foley catheter removal, basic arrhythmia, 12‑lead ECG, or NG tube clamping and removal.
Qualifications
  • High school diploma or GED.
  • At least one of the following:
    • One year of general healthcare experience.
    • Six months as a UPMC Nursing Assistant/CNA with PCT competency achieved within 120 days of hire/transfer/promotion.
    • Enrollment in a PT/OT/PA program or related healthcare training program with completion of at least one clinical rotation.
    • Bachelor's degree in a health sciences field.
  • Successful completion of UPMC Patient Care Technician class and eRecord training.
  • Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) or Paramedic, or current enrollment in an EMT or Paramedic program preferred.
Licensure, Certifications, and Clearances
  • CPR required based on AHA standards, including didactic and skills demonstration within 30 days of hire.
  • ACLS preferred.
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) or Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR).
  • Act 34 certification.
  • OAPSA certification.
