Job summary

UnityPoint Health is seeking a Patient Care Technician to deliver hands-on patient care and support the nursing team in a dynamic hospital unit. The PCT will assist with activities of daily living, mobility, and essentials such as nutrition and hydration under the supervision of a registered nurse.

The role emphasizes accurate documentation, patient safety, and collaboration with an interdisciplinary team to promote high-quality outcomes and a positive patient experience.

Qualifications

• Must be able to perform activities of daily living assistance and patient care under RN supervision.
• CNA certification preferred and Basic Life Support (BLS) certification required or obtainable within 3 months of hire.
• Must be at least 16 years old and capable of lifting up to 50 pounds.

Responsibilities

• Deliver hands-on patient care and comfort and assist with clinical procedures as directed by the RN.
• Observe, report and document patient status accurately and timely.
• Assist with mobility, nutrition, hydration and elimination needs and prepare environments for procedures.

Overview

Shift: Days, 12-hour shift 1 week and two 12-hour shifts the next week, weekend and holiday rotation

Under the direction of a licensed professional, the Patient Care Technician delivers hands-on patient care and comfort, assists with clinical procedures and technical tasks, and accurately observes, reports, and documents patient status. The role supports safe, efficient unit operations by focusing on personal care, mobility, nutrition, hydration, elimination, and prevention of complications, while preparing patients and environments for procedures. Collaborating with the interdisciplinary team, the PCT provides compassionate, patient- and family-centered support across diverse care settings to promote quality outcomes and a positive experience.

Responsibilities

• PCTs will perform patient care and treatments under supervision of a RN. Provides and documents care including, but not limited to, activities of daily living, mobility, specimen collection and respiratory support activities as directed by the RN.
• Possess the ability to lift, move, position and transport patients.
• Demonstrates the ability to meet the department work schedule.
• Demonstrates initiative to improve quality of care, patient and employee safety, and customer service.
• Team members under the age of 18 may not independently operate mechanical lift equipment.

Qualifications

License(s)/Certification(s):

• CNA certification preferred
• Must possess and maintain current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification or obtain certification within three (3) months from date of hire.

Other:

• Must be 16 years old or older
• Level 3 Medium Work: Exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 20 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects.
