Job summary

Mercy Medical Center in Cedar Rapids seeks a Patient Care Technician/Registrar to provide safe, patient-centered care under the supervision of a licensed nurse. You will maintain accurate real-time documentation, communicate clearly with patients and families, and support departmental operations.

Ideal candidates have CNA or EMT background, a High School diploma, BLS certification, and the ability to lift and assist with transfers.

Qualifications

  • Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to communicate with patients, families and co-workers.
  • Must have or be eligible for Basic Life Support (BLS) certification.
  • Previous Patient Care Technician (PCT) or Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) experience preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Provide safe, effective patient care under supervision of a licensed nurse.
  • Maintain real-time documentation of patient care.
  • Communicate changes in patient condition to the licensed nurse.
  • Assist with patient transfers and daily living activities as needed.
  • Support department operations and hand-offs with accurate information.

The Patient Care Technician/Registrar may fulfill an expanded role by performing additional tasks and responsibilities as delegated by their department.Job DescriptionJob DutiesEnsures that accurate and clinically relevant information is communicated with patients, their families, and co-workers at hand offs and other times as needed. Take all measures necessary to ensure that the appropriate and involved parties have communicated necessary information in order to allow for the best possible patient outcomeProvides safe and effective patient care under the supervision of the licensed nurse by performing tasks and support functions as delegated by departmentObserves and communicates to the licensed nurse any changes in patient condition and pertinent information regarding the needs of the patient and/or significant othersDemonstrates effective and age appropriate communication as well as the ability to understand the needs of the patient including non-verbal communication, fears, anxieties and language/cultural barriersMaintains accurate and real time documentation of patient care providedAssures patient privacy by knocking on doors, closing curtains and protecting patient informationResponds within scope of practice to emergencies and life threatening conditionsDemonstrates support for changes in practice designed to improve performance.Organizes and prioritizes daily work, taking into account the needs of patients, families and other health care workersMaintains cleanliness and organization of patient rooms and department work areasAssists in identifying quality improvement opportunities and demonstrate support for changes in practice designed to improve performanceAbility to prioritize tasks, identify needs for changes in priorities and takes the initiative to recommend and implement changes in concert with their supervisor.Performs department specific duties as outlined on the department specific developmental checklist.Attends departmental/hospital meetings, activities or special projects per departmental guidelines.Practices cost containment efforts on a shift to shift basis by efficient use of time and resources, i.e., man-hours, patient charges, equipment, supplies, etc.Ensures registration is complete, and if not able to complete, initiates the necessary follow up.Maintains patient record by editing and completing other functions.Maintains departmental functions when systems are not operating.Works with volunteers and assists them when needed.Projects competent and caring attitude to clients. Represents the hospital and department in a positive manner. Maintain confidentiality of patients, specimens and records. Inventory and deliver supplies to clients' offices as requested.Ensures specimen integrity through the use of designated specimen tracking equipment when made available.Safely drives a hospital owned vehicle to and from Mercy facilities.Maintains maintenance logs on vehicles as instructed by the department manager.Follows Mercy's safety guidelines, carries out job-specific safety duties and responsibilities, and promptly reports any unsafe conditions, situations, incidents and injuries.Knowledge, Skills and AbilitiesExcellent interpersonal skills.Demonstrates the ability to provide safe and effective patient care.Must have the ability to remain focused in stressful situations and understand and perform multiple tasks quickly.Professional ExperiencePrevious Patient Care Tech or Certified Nursing Assistant experience preferred.EducationHigh School diploma or equivalent preferredIn addition, ONE of the following is preferred:completed a Certified Nurse Assistant (CNA) or Health Support Professional programa minimum of 2 years in a baccalaureate programfirst year student in an ADN programcomparable education, training, and experience as a CNA or EMT in the absence of successful completion of a CNA or Health Support Professional programLicensure, Certification, RegistrationCurrent certification in Basic Life Support (BLS), in accordance with the American Heart Association required.Iowa Dependent Adult Abuse/Iowa Child Abuse Mandatory Reporter training required. Employee must submit certification of completed training to Human Resources prior to start or transfer date.Valid Driver's License required.Must meet insurability requirements for purposes of utilizing Mercy vehicles - must be at least age 18 required.Must have and maintain a good driving record.
