Job summary

MercyOne Health System invites applications for a Patient Care Tech. Join a large Des Moines area health system and provide nurse- or LPN-delegated patient care across 12-hour day shifts, with rotating weekends and holidays.

You will help with hygiene, mobility, vital signs, and safety while supporting a busy hospital floor. Minimum qualifications include being at least 16, completing Mandatory Reporter training within 3 months, and achieving BLS for Healthcare Providers within 6 weeks of hire.

Qualifications

• Must be 16 years of age.
• Mandatory Reporter training within 3 months of hire.
• BLS certification within 6 weeks of hire.

Responsibilities

• Delivers assigned patient care and treatment as delegated by an RN or LPN.
• Assists with personal hygiene, bathing, ambulation, transport, ROM, dressing, feeding, bandage changing and elimination.
• Responds to calls and ensures patient safety through rounding, safety practices and equipment maintenance.
• Calculates intake/output, measures vital signs, performs bedside glucose testing, and documents in health records.
• Initiates or assists with CPR and other emergency measures.
• Performs post-mortem care.
• Sets up equipment, prepares patients/rooms for procedures, admissions and transfers.
• Observes changes in patient condition and reports to the nurse.
• Collects labels specimens and maintains equipment.
• Sets up, operates, and maintains specified medical devices.

General Requirements

• Delivers assigned patient care and treatment as delegated by an RN or LPN.
• Performs or assists patients with activities including personal hygiene, bathing, ambulation, transporting, range of motion exercises, dressing/undressing, feeding, changing bandages, elimination needs, and emptying drainage devices.
• Responds to patient calls and anticipates patient needs. Assures patient safety and comfort through use of safe patient handling techniques, regular rounding, environmental maintenance, equipment maintenance, and other appropriate safety measures.
• Calculates intake and output (excluding IVs). Measures vital signs. Performs bedside blood glucose testing. Makes entries to patient health records as consistent with scope of job duties and in compliance with company policy.
• Initiates or assists with emergency support measures (i.e., cardiopulmonary resuscitation, protecting patient from injury).
• Performs post-mortem care.
• Sets up equipment and supplies for procedures. Prepares patients and rooms for procedures, admissions, and transfers. Discharges patients from system.
• Observes and reports information regarding any change in physical/mental condition, behavior, or status of the patient to the nurse.
• Collects and labels specimens.
• Sets up, operates, and maintains selected pieces of equipment.

Schedule

12-hour shifts; 7:00 AM - 7:30 PM; Days; rotating weekends and Holidays

Minimum Qualification

• Must be 16 years of age.
• Proof of completion of Mandatory Reporter - Child and/or Dependent Adult Abuse training within three (3) months of hire.
• American Heart Association Basic Life Support (BLS) for Healthcare Providers certified within six (6) weeks of hire.
