Job summary

BARNES-JEWISH HOSPITAL is seeking a Nursing Assistant to provide direct patient care during night shifts. You will support licensed nurses, help with ADLs, monitor vital signs, and assist with daily patient needs in a fast-paced surgical services environment.

The role requires a High School Diploma or GED and a Certified Nurse Assistant certification. 36 hours per week with nights 7:00 pm–7:30 am and holiday/weekend rotations are included in the schedule.

Qualifications

• High School Diploma or GED required.
• Preferred experience as a CNA, nurse assistant, EMT, or surgical technician.
• Licensed CNA certification is required.

Responsibilities

• Provides direct patient care under the supervision of a licensed nurse, supporting patient and family centered care.
• Administers or assists patients with Activities of Daily Living (ADLs), takes vital signs, intake & output, and performs related care as requested.
• Collects clinical data and notifies the nurse of changes in patient status.
• Assists with patient and family education and documents all care activities using appropriate terminology.
• Ensures supplies and equipment are available to meet each patient’s needs.

Overview

The Surgical Services Department provides pre-op and post-op inpatient care to those patients undergoing specialty surgical procedures in the areas of abdominal solid organ transplant, vascular surgery, hepatobiliary, trauma, ear-nose and throat, orthopedic, colo-rectal, urology and other general surgical procedures. Inpatient care in this department focuses on pre-op needs, post-op care and treatment after phase I recovery through discharge from an inpatient nursing division. The department's surgical observation unit and ICU provide intensive care and treatment to those post-op or post-traumatic patients whose condition requires treatment at this level.

Role Purpose

Provides direct patient care to support the licensed professional nurses responsible for a team of patients to ensure a safe environment for patients by reducing risk of harm. Collects vital information on the patient and reports such to the nursing team which contributes to the overall assessment of each patient and any changes to a patient's condition.

Responsibilities

• Implements direct patient care under the supervision of the nurse, promoting patient and family centered care in a healing environment. Administers or assists patients with Activities of Daily Living (ADLs), performs vital signs, intake & output, fall and pressure ulcer prevention measures, urinary catheter care, phlebotomy, or point of care testing as requested.
• Collects clinical data and information on patients, and reports changes in patient status to the nurse.
• Assists nurse with patient and family education. Documents all patient care activities provided with correct medical terminology. Acts as 1:1 patient safety sitter as necessary.
• Ensures availability of supplies and equipment to meet each patient's needs.
• Participates in activities that promote patient safety, quality and regulatory compliance. Participates in professional development.
