Job summary

VCU Health is seeking a Patient Care Technician to provide direct, age-appropriate care under the supervision of a registered nurse or licensed practitioner. The role requires completing a state-recognized CNA program or an approved nursing track, with BLS HCP certification or equivalent.

Preferred acute care nursing assistant experience and relevant certifications enhance candidacy. Care Partners work all shifts, including weekends and holidays, with schedules set by the Nurse Manager.

Qualifications

• Completion of a state recognized CNA program or equivalent nursing credential.
• Completion of first semester junior year in BSN program or completion of associated basic nursing courses.
• ADP diploma or associate degree in nursing acceptable with clinical rotation.</br>
• EMT program or medical assistant program completion.
• One year of medical assistant, care partner, or military corpsman experience within the last three years.
• License/ certification: BLS HCP or equivalent.

Responsibilities

• Provide direct patient care under RN or licensed practitioner supervision.
• Perform nursing tasks and problem solve following hospital policies.
• Adapt care under supervision and coordinate with team to meet care plans.

Job description

The Patient Care Technician provides direct, age-specific care to a patient or group of patients based on medical orders and the plan of care under the direction of the RN or licensed independent practitioner.

Licensure, Certification, or Registration Requirements for continued employment: AHA BLS HCP Certification or equivalent

Experience REQUIRED: N/A

Experience PREFERRED:

• Acute care experience as a nursing assistant or aide experience

Education/training REQUIRED:

• Completion of state recognized CNA program; or
• Completion of first semester junior year in an accredited BSN program dependent upon school curriculum. VCU/MCV BSN students - completion of sophomore year, Nursing 201, 202, 261.
• Accredited Associate Degree and Diploma programs - completion of first year or a minimum of two semesters of basic nursing courses. Specialty areas e.g. pediatrics, women`s health, psychiatry may require completion of a clinical rotation in that area; or
• Completion of EMT program; or Completion of medical assistant program; or
• One (1) year of medical assistant work experience within the last three (3) years; or
• One (1) year of care partner or equivalent work experience within the last three (3) years; or
• One (1) year of military corpsman experience within the last three (3) years

Independent action(s) required:

• - Functions under direction of a licensed independent practitioner, manager and/or RN in providing patient care, emotional support, and problem solving; all in accordance with hospital, nursing and unit policy/procedure.
• - Requires prior approval or guidance from supervisor: time/schedule changes; legal issues; directed care which deviates from standard; and identify educational resources to meet developmental needs.
• - Job duties may include the handling, transportation, access to and/or contact with medications and related supplies.

Additional position requirements:

• - Care Partners work all three shifts, weekends and holidays.
• - Individual shift rotation and schedules will be established with your specific Nurse Manager/Practice Manager.
• - Schedules, including requirements of shift rotations and hours of work may be adjusted as necessary to meet unit requirements and/or as needed.

Compensation Range: $17.25 - $24.12
