Job summary

Wheeling Hospital, part of WVU Medicine, is seeking a patient care associate to support licensed staff in direct and indirect patient care. You’ll help with basic patient care, comfort, and coordination with nurses across shifts. Training is provided, and you’ll work under supervision to ensure quality care.

Qualifications include a high school diploma and BLS certification within 30 days of hire. The role requires strong communication and the ability to work in a fast-paced hospital environment.

Qualifications

  • Obtain Basic Life Support (BLS) certification within 30 days of hire date.

Responsibilities

  • Observes and reports patient concerns/changes in condition to a registered nurse immediately.
  • Assists the Registered Nurse with admission, transfer, discharge and general patient care duties.
  • Records vital signs and assists in personal hygiene and other patient comfort measures.
  • Records oral intake and outputs (temperature, blood pressure and other monitoring).
  • Assists in specimen collection and related activities.
  • Maintains a clean, safe environment to help prevent infections and ensure safety.
  • Reports necessary equipment repairs to appropriate personnel promptly.
  • Prepares patients for examinations and diagnostic procedures.
  • Communicates nutrition issues to the RN, e.g., poor appetite or diet changes.
  • Assists department with administrative tasks and answers patient call bells.

This position will provide high-quality patient care in coordination with licensed medical staff.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

EDUCATION, CERTIFICATION, AND/OR LICENSURE:

  • 1. High School Diploma or equivalent.
  • 2. Obtain certification in Basic Life Support within 30 days of hire date.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

EXPERIENCE:

  • 1. Prior patient care experience.

  • 5. Assists in indirect patient care by maintaining a clean and safe environment to help prevent and/or control infections and to provide for safety of patients, visitors and employees.
  • 6. Reports all necessary equipment repairs to appropriate personnel according to departmental procedure in a timely manner.
  • 7. Prepares patients for examinations and diagnostic procedures according to departmental procedure.
  • 8. Communicates with RN regarding any nutrition issues, such as poor appetite or verbalized lack of understanding of diet changes.
  • 10. Assists department with administrative tasks to support the department operations.
  • 11. Answers patient call bell and relays message to appropriate personnel
For facilities with specialty accreditation requirements
  • 1. Completion of annual required education related to specialty accreditation as defined by accreditation standards. Training may be completed through CBLs, trainings, In-services, and competency validation.
