Job summary

Memorial Hermann Health System is seeking a Patient Care Technician (PCT) III to deliver high-quality direct patient care under licensed nurse supervision. You will monitor vital signs, assist with ADLs, document accurately, collect specimens, and support a safe, compassionate care environment.

• Three (3) years of prior patient care experience (e.g. CNA, EMT, or PCT) in an acute care setting.
• Certified in Basic Life Support (BLS) through the American Heart Association within 90 days of employment.
• Proficiency in at least 3 of the 6 Advanced PCT competencies: Phlebotomy, Wound Care, Cardiac Monitoring, Decontamination, BLS instructor, Stop the Bleed instructor.

Responsibilities

• Provides direct patient care under the supervision of a licensed nurse.
• Performs duties such as measuring vital signs, monitoring condition, assisting with activities of daily living and documentation.
• Maintains a safe, clean environment and reports changes to the nurse.
• Assists with lab specimen collection and helps orient new staff as needed.
• Ensures adherence to Memorial Hermann policies and contributes to department safety and quality.

Job Summary

The Patient Care Technician (PCT) III performs patient care activities, including not limited to identifying and responding to abnormal findings, appropriately escalating changes in the patient’s condition to the nurse, and activities of daily living (ADL’s). The PCT III provides assistance with patient elimination, hygiene, comfort, safety, nutrition, and progress activity and practices patient and family centered care. Regularly uses both Core and Advanced PCT competencies in their daily work. This role typically reports to the Unit Manager.

Education: (None)

Licenses/Certifications: Certified in Basic Life Support issued by (AHA) American Heart Association within 90 days of employment.

Experience / Knowledge / Skills: Three (3) years of prior patient care experience (e.g. Certified Nursing Assistant, or Emergency Medical Technician, or Patient Care Technician) or similar role required, preferably in an acute care setting. Proficiency in all Core Competencies of the PCT position as noted in Memorial Hermann’s PCT Competency Based Tool and as validated by Memorial Hermann Clinical Education no later than the end of orientation. Proficiency in at least 3 out of 6 Advanced Competencies of the PCT III position:

• 1.) Phlebotomy *required
• 2.) Wound Care *required
• 3.) Cardiac Monitoring
• 4.) Decontamination
• 5.) Basic Life Support instructor
• 6.) Stop the Bleed® instructor

Principal Accountabilities

• Provides direct patient care for assigned patients under the direct supervision of a licensed nurse.
• Direct patient care duties include but are not limited to vital signs (pre and post treatment, as applicable), visual monitoring of a patient’s condition, hygiene support, toileting support, mobility support, nutrition support, bathing support, charting, and other activities of daily living as needed.
• Responsible for timely and accurate documentation of information.
• Should appropriately report any unusual changes or findings to the nurse.
• Assists in the maintenance of a safe and clean working environment. Demonstrates safe work practices and attitudes; follows safety rules; works to prevent unsafe conditions and behaviors; participates in organizational departments’ safety programs; adheres to all Memorial Hermann policies and procedures.
• Obtains and prepares laboratory specimens as prescribed. Helps orient new employees where appropriate and serve as a resource to less experienced staff.
• Ensures safe care to patients, staff and visitors; adheres to all Memorial Hermann policies, procedures, and standards within budgetary specifications including time management, supply management, productivity and quality of service.
• Promotes individual professional growth and development by meeting requirements for mandatory/continuing education and skills competency; supports department-based goals which contribute to the success of the organization.
