Job summary

Rochester Regional Health is seeking a Patient Care Technician for the Emergency Department in Batavia, NY. This role provides direct and indirect patient care, supports the care delivery team, and manages patient hygiene, vital signs, and mobility with a focus on compassionate service.

Shift: Evening/Night, rotating weekends. 36 hours per week. Requires BLS and EMT/CNA-related qualifications. Includes potential clerical duties and collaboration with the care team.

Qualifications

• Minimum age 18.
• Basic Life Support (BLS) certification required.
• Experience in patient care preferred.

Responsibilities

• Provide direct patient care and indirect activities to facilitate unit functioning.
• Participate as a member of the care delivery team.
• Provide safe and competent care for patients’ basic needs including bathing, grooming and hygiene.
• Take patient vitals and monitor status.
• Demonstrate strong communication with patients, families and care team.
• Assist with ambulation, transfers, and patient mobility.
• Assist with admissions, discharges and transfers.
• May perform clerical duties such as transcription and chart maintenance.

Job Title: Patient Care Technician

Department: Emergency Department

Location: UMMC

Hours Per Week: 36 hours

Schedule: Evening/Night, Rotating Weekend

SUMMARY: Provides direct or indirect patient care in accordance with treatment plans as determined/delegated by a licensed nurse or RN. Assists with tasks necessary for the general management and organization of the patient care unit, being flexible meeting patient and/or unit needs.

RESPONSIBILITIES

• Provide direct patient care & indirect activities to facilitate unit functioning.
• Participates as a member of the care delivery team.
• Provide safe and competent care for patients with relationship to nutritional, skin integrity, elimination & hygiene needs including bathing, grooming and changing bed linens.
• Take patient vital signs including temperature, pulse, respirations, blood pressure and pain level.
• Demonstrate excellent communication skills, compassion and any other kind of support needed for the patient and patient family members.
• Demonstrates exceptional communication with the members of the care delivery team modeling teamwork for other team members.
• Assist with ambulation, feeding, transferring or lifting of patients.
• Assist with the admission, discharge and transfer of patients.
• May also perform clerical duties including transcription & maintenance of patient charts.
• Assists patient with mobility, such as sitting, standing, and walking.
• (Cath lab only) - Stocks rooms, may handle meds, sharps and syringes on the OR field.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

Minimum age requirement: 18

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

• Completion of one of the following: Nursing Fundamentals, Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) certification, experience as a medical assistant/technician in a health-related facility or participation in a Patient Care Technician training program.
• Associates degree
• Excellent customer service and communication skills.

• BLS - Basic Life Support - American Heart Association (AHA), EMT - Emergency Medical Technician - National Registry of Emergency Medical Technicians (NREMT)

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

Moderate - Clinical - Moderate clinical roles are patient facing roles that require continual movement, including standing, walking, and lifting 20-50 lbs., along with pushing and pulling medical equipment and assisting with patient positioning. Employees perform frequent bending, twisting, and reaching while completing fine motor tasks in busy or confined clinical environments. High sensory acuity is essential for monitoring patient status and responding to alarms or safety concerns. Emotional and cognitive demands are substantial, involving decision-making under pressure, responding to emergencies, and maintaining sustained focus. Environmental exposures include infectious agents, bodily fluids, chemicals, and radiation. TB testing, mask-fit testing, and physical exams are common requirements. For disease specific care programs refer to the program specific requirements of the department for further specifications on experience and educational expectations, including continuing education requirements.
